“Why” is a curiosity question, but often comes across as a shaming question. Instead of “why, ” I prefer “tell me more about that” or “what about ____ made you feel____, ” or “how did you come to that decision, ” or “what was your process like to arrive at that conclusion…” Basically changing out “why” with “what” or “how” can create a safer environment and lead to a Deeper connection and story.

1. Tell me about a time when...
2. Mirror your guest by repeating the last few words of his or her statement.
3. How or what were you feeling in this moment / when this happened?
4. What happened next?
5. Why

Remember: be genuinely curious and listen actively.

Great questions and very helpful content. Thanks Pat!

Wow! This is exactly the same steps we use in our coaching sessions and I've never thought about it could be implemented in interviews ! Great to know I'll be starting to use them! Thank you Pat 🙏🙏

Thank you for these tips! I love all of the questions and especially the variety on asking how they felt (feeling/emotional), what went through their mind (thinking/logical), and what they felt in their gut (feeling/physical). Hits the different thinking styles!

Great video Pat! What I like about these kinds of questions is that they delve a little deeper and can lead to deeper conversations, something that I think society really needs. I’m getting ready to start my own podcast so I’m thankful for the information!

HOW TIMELY that this video popped up on YT. I am conducting my first podcast interview in 3 days. Pat, your suggestions will take what I have written to ask the interviewee to the next level. Thank you🤩

Glad to know I’m on the right path with my question asking on my VERY niche podcast. Thank you Pat, after many years, your vids continue to inspire me.

This is excellent. And as you mentioned, these are techniques that can be used in a "regular" conversation as well. It will make you a better listener and make people have much more meaningful conversations with you.

Brilliant as always .These questions are so useful in a number of topics and instances. ...I’ve even seen some of them used to create rapport in job interviews.

Great stuff Pat😎

I'll apply all of them next Wednesday when I'll have a friend of mine on the show who just quit his job after hustling for a few years ...

... and next week he'll become his own boss!🍺🍺🍺

Thanks Pat for these awesome ideas. I belive the hardest one for me will be the "mirroring". We'll see how it goes.💪

Thank you for this great value! I am going to start implementing all these into my podcast but the one I find that will be most powerful is, "Tell me about a time when..." This is going to help me get to that next level of value! Thank you again for your content.

Loved this. I've done a lot of interviewing for writing jobs in my career but these questions are particularly great for a podcast conversation. I especially loved the "mirroring" tip. I started doing this with you on the podcast, and I saw how easy it was. So cool! I'm going to try it with my family and friends - get some practice in before launching my podcast. :-) Thank you!
