Mechanical keyboards uses an analog switch - or 2 separate pins in an enclosed housing, when keys are pressed, the switch (pins) connects and registers an input. Membrane keyboard use the same principle but instead of using a switch, it uses a silicone or other membrane (rubbery) like material to separate 2 pins, the pins are not enclosed and are layouted all throughout the board. Membrane relies more on finger pressure to connect the 2 pins to register an input.

Unpopular opinion but I have tried both and I I prefer membrane keyboards. You can get a normal one for 20 bucks, they bottom out way quicker so I feel they are more responsive, and they are very quiet.

Mine is a membrane gaming keyboard but it truly feels like a mechanical the manufacture did a amazing job

A mechanical keyboard has seperate switches for each key while a membrane has a rubber sheet or whatever for every key, and you can customize alot in a mechanical keyboard

One thing that need to be considered is mechanical keyboard usually more expensive than membrane keyboard... So... If you only looking for typing hardware, you know what to buy

The super high profile on many mechanical keyboards is an ergonomic nightmare. The switches feel nice though.

High price, high sound ( depending on the keys you get ) looks cooler - mechanical keyboard

Low price, low sound, looks bad but gets the job done - membrane keyboard

[ I don't know why people love mechanical keyboards that much, at least for me mechanical keyboards are pretty much a scam, now don't get me wrong here ..I don't hate mechanical keyboard in fact I have 4 of them but I don't know what all this hype is about ]
