👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I’m Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is de ply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.

When I was 18, I was signed to a major label and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!

I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my YouTube channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, YouTube channel and Social Agency.

It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

A message to help you today 👇

I get it, it’s hard.

Writing music, producing music, releasing music, monetizing your music is HARD.

It’s the most competitive industry outside of sport and there is so much competition everywhere. It’s too easy to look at your phone, look at someone else’s numbers and compare/wish they were yours.

But I promise you…

That other person you’re looking at is looking at someone else’s numbers thinking exactly the same. All that happens when you reach one landmark is you immediately look to the next.

So take a moment now to appreciate where you’re at RIGHT NOW in your journey. All you can do is love the journey because the destination will never feel how you think it will.

We’re all on our own rollercoaster…

There will ALWAYS be someone doing “better” than you and take comfort in that. You’re doing absolutely fine, keep working hard and enjoying the journey.

Have faith in yourself and be honest with your gut feeling. If you feel you’re not working hard enough, work harder. If you feel like something isn’t working, change it up and test different avenues. There’s ALWAYS answers but you won’t find them in unhealthy comparisons.

Hope that helps you today and let’s smash this week.

Damo 🖤

I just recently figured out what to do to work around all the extra family time, too. Those extra 6 hours a day disappear when you're raising a family. First of all, the first hour is spent getting ready for work, we don't just hop out of bed and start commuting. Then you cook dinner for your family, prep their lunches, clean the dishes, that's an extra 3 hours there. Then you're left with only 2 hours of time to actually relax, and I take that every time, because it's exhausting working for 14 hours a day, I don't want to take away the only 2 hours I have to unwind. Not to mention the amount of time I actually want to spend with my family. Then there's the days you do laundry, grocery shopping, etc. This is a flawed idea that you can find all this free time when 11 of my 16 waking hours are dedicated to my full time job (1 hour commute both ways and 1 hour getting ready in the morning). My regular day starts at 6am, and when I finally get settled to have time for myself, it's 10pm. I don't even get the time to write the actual music. This video still doesn't apply to me, but im glad to input my solution. You assume we can cook meals in less than an hour and that we don't have to maintain our relationships. It's still impossible to make time on the days I work. Luckily for me, I just started substitute teaching. It pays 2-3x more than my minimum wage jobs did, and I only have to work 180-210 days a year maximum. I'm left with at least 155 days off a year that I can do music work. I'm leaving this here for anyone who is also in my situation. All i needed to start was a bachelors degree.

"Comes down to problem solving"... Honestly, for anyone who works a full-time job (like me) and lives and breathes performing, problem solving is the foundation of juggling responsibilities and music. Great video DK!

I used to travel the country working full time, singing for thousands of people daily while simultaneously earning $100 hour working on my performance skills. Full time jobs can be tailored to fit. Cheers Damo! 🐒

Creative types require the mental space to create, especially musicians. Everything is fighting for that space.

I just took a week off work to record an EP. Will be producing, mixing and mastering it myself. I'll be doing the artwork too. I just can't get my head around creating compelling socials. If I had the option to delegate a job to someone, it'd be socials.

Actually as I am an ambient music producer, I use the ambience around to promote my music. When I commute by train, early in the morning there is a mist on the rails sometimes - so that is a great scenery to record some shorts. So I do some promotion while I commute.

I work full time and barely have time for anything lately but when I get home from work I am right back in the game. Actually I even do music while at work I hum melodies and lyrics into my phone when I get ideas, I use social media all day long to engage with fans and promote, probably shouldn't but I have to keep up with it and, any time I have to do anything with my music I do it whether I have time or not to get it done and I try to make content ahead of time if I can for later use. Sometimes I will make and edit a short video 30 mins before work and edit it and upload it everywhere with barely enough time to spare to jump in my car and get to work, but it all works out lol. I even make videos on my lunch break to keep fans in the loop with what I'm doing or talk about my new song I have coming out tomorrow. Gott a do what you gotta do if you really want it.

Important to also emphasise that rest is an important part of your calendar! Otherwise, there's a good chance you won't be making music for more than a few months if you go ham and work on your artist project with every spare hour you have. Been there, done that.

9:20 - 9:47 = my creative life in a nutshell. “Not letting them give you money”. It’s a guilt thing for me. And too focused on trying to make banger videos on here. 😅 Trying to break that cycle. Needed this.
