The N64 and the DD should've been a combined console base unit; not and add-on! So with that said, here's how I would've done things differently.

1) Make the N64 a Zip Disk based unit media(though the cartridge slot will remain in place to serve other purposes). But we will double the storage from 64mgs to 128mgs. Production will still be cheap and efficient for both 1st and 3rd parties alike and will be a much better long term investment for everyone involved. Software will be priced at $39.99. I'd also like to make it clear that the Virtual Boy will be cancelled and will just be relegated to being a behind the scenes showcase of Nintendo learning how 3D development can work while they're still ironing out the N64's hardware and software!

2) SNES backwards compatibility. Despite what people may have thought back then, the SNES was still thriving during the 16-bit era; heck, even co-existing with the 3DO, Neo Geo, Sega Saturn, Playstation, and N64 during that time and was still thriving. I'd like to commision a stand-alone "Super FX3" pass through cartridge Chip clocked at 26.42mhz, contain some of the advantages of the SA-1 Chip, and add in 2mgs of RAM for just $59.99, and market it as an advanced accelerator that help in bringing some of the great 2D games the 3DO, Neo Geo, Sega Saturn, and Playstation recieved. While we may not recieve tons of software for it long term, but we should games that are already in development access to the device to enhance their visuals, speed/framerate, and other graphical enhancements; enhancements almost on par with what the 2D games of the 5th generation had to offer on their respective platforms!

3) It is clear that eventhough the Zip Disk storage is an improvement over the cartridge media in terms of production and space, but with current specs of the N64 itself, we will need to increase them if we want long term results for it. Will double the internal RAM from 4mgs to 8mgs to increase load times in games and double the texture cache from 4kbs to 8kbs to help reduce graphical blur that plagued most games at the time. I understand doing that in the beginning will result in increase of the console's price, but we must take this risk if we're going to make long term impressions of it. Besides, the price of RAM would come down in a year's time as production gets going; so we won't have to worry about over investing too much long term.

4) Online connectivity will still be a reality in this timeline just like how it was going to be in our. A modem in the form of cartridge will be developed and sold seperately upon release for just $19.95. Allowing gamers to gain access to the internet and be able to play online games with other N64 owners; as well as PC gamers and future Dreamcast gamers alike. We will even be able to download NES and Turbo Graphix 16 Hue card games onto the DD just like how we would've been able to in our original timeline.

5) Finally, we will be releasing the N64 in all regions of the world in 1996 for $249.99 with software launches like Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, K.I. Gold, and Starwars: Shadows of the Empire ready to go.

I remember 96 like it was yesterday.
Loved n64 at 11yo, it came purple and get this two rumble packs with a switch that turned it to a mem card.
I have no idea where my step dad got it but. Damn. Tons of memories!
