30 Things You Need to Throw Away from Your House

According to the National Association of Professional Organizers, we spend at least 1 year of our lives looking for stuff. So why do we hold on to things? The answer is simple. Not everything comes with an expiration date. So, we’re unsure when we should get rid of old items. But, ditching things that we no longer use can help us maximize space and improve productivity.

To help yourself declutter, you have to follow one simple rule. Chuck away anything you haven’t used in the past two years. Now, don’t go around putting everything in boxes. That’ll create a huge mess. Instead, do one item at a time!

SUMMARY:
- The only reason to keep single socks is if you’re looking to get crafty and upcycle them.
- People put a lot of pride and effort into creating their movie collections, but with the push of a button, you can transfer all of them on to a hard-drive.
- Show your hair some love. It’s better to invest in a few good quality hairbands than having a 100 of them constantly breaking.
- We hold on to our spices in case we need to give our dishes some extra flavor. But, we keep them way too long.
- Razors that are kept in a moist environment tend to get rusty twice as fast. Shaving with rusty razors can cause burns and skin infections.
- There are places you can take your plastic bags and recycle them, putting an end to the ever-growing mass.
- Skincare products that are rarely used are a great source of bacterial growth. So, it’s safer for your skin if you get rid of them.
- Things like colored pens and little note pads make us feel more organized. But the ones that’ve been sitting in your drawer can be donated.
- The truth is, most of us have a few favorite coffee mugs. The rest of them sit in a cupboard collecting dust.
- There are better ways to remember your adventurous vacation than holding on to tiny shampoo and soap bottles from the hotel you stayed in.
- Unless you’re an electrician or an engineer who can get inventive with their old power cords, there’s no reason to keep them.
- If you still have the receipt from the take-out place you ate lunch at a week ago, then you know what to do.
- This is a huge mistake! There are many things that can go wrong with old prescription medication, so it’s better to get rid of them.
- Take-out menus are like emergency service phone numbers. But with all the take-out places having their menus online, there’s no reason to keep them.
- If your loofah is more than a month old, it should be replaced. As time progresses, they get dirtier.
- Whether it’s a keyboard waffle maker or a normal toaster that you’ve used once, don’t hold on to it. Some appliances are more trouble to use than to not.
- If your bathroom towels begin to feel like cardboard boxes, this is a sign that they’ve reached their lifespan.

Most of the things you mentioned can be recycled. Old sheets cover my plants during a freeze and I also place them on the floor for wet muddy dog paws. Old towels and some cotton clothes get converted to rags. Plastic containers without lids get used seeding garden plants. Card board I use to place under art projects or furniture make overs. Etc. My motto: repair, repurpose, or recycle and if all else fails donate or throw away!

My grandson is talking about moving out on his own, so grandma is setting him up with most items he'll need, sans furniture, and decluttering my place as well. He likes vintage & I am happy to oblige. Win-win!

well, years ago I had an argument with my husband about my dog that he wanted me to get rid of. I said I'd get rid of him first, never the dog. and I did. life was so much easier after that. lol

Old towels are excellent for cleaning rags, temporary floor mats when it rains, dog bed covers and many other things. Too useful to throw away.

"Throwing away" is a careless response. I segregate unwanted clothes. Decent clothes go to the needy and poor. Old towels become kitchen cleaning rags. Old bed sheets and pillow covers become door mats. Renew, Reuse, Recycle.

Me: *throws away something I haven't used in 4 years*

Me a week later: *regrets throwing it away because it suddenly becomes the very thing I need*

I use orphaned socks as dusting mitts. If it's a sock from a favorite pair I cut the top or ankle part off and use it as a cozy on my favorite cold drink glass or bottle.

Loved the tip about the animal shelter. I've been doing this for years. They not only take towels, but blankets and bedspreads. Basically anything like that that is soft and absorbent. My towels don't usually start to feel like "cardboard" but they do start to fray and shred. I put them in a basket that I have set aside and when it's full, I take it to the county animal shelter.

Why throw away plastic bags? I usually re-purpose them as garbage bags. 🤷🏼‍♀️

We took a blank part of a kitchen wall and made a mug display! Now those cute and sentimental mugs have become a statement piece and conversation starter when we have people over!

During lent our priest encouraged us to donate unused items. He declared those items were no longer ours and belonged to people who truly needed them. Wow, very well said!

Well, after 2 years I am now able to wear my old clothes again. I'm glad I didn't throw them out.

It is a different perspective for artists and crafters.

Almost everything is usable.

I throw away receipts if they're not needed for returning items and I keep my clothes until they actually wear out because I don't buy anything that's fashionable. Jeans and T-shirts NEVER go out of style. They're classics.👕👖👕👖

instead of throwing out socks start a scrap sock bag, socks can be used in many different applications, 1.) Cleaning just about anything, 2.) Staining furniture etc. 3.) Stuffing for a craft item 4.) Buffing cars 5.) Polishing shoes, furniture etc. and many other uses, also depending ton the fiber content certain socks work better than others for different tasks. my experience
