30 Things You Missed in Coraline (2009)

Coraline is loaded with twisted references and creepy, dark secrets... how many of them did you know about?

I always get requests to cover Henry Selick's creepy, gothic 2009 stop-motion nightmare, Coraline. And since it happens to be one of my favorite movies, and one of the only animated horror films I know of to come out of the Western Hemisphere, I thought it to be a perfect candidate for an episode of Things You Missed.

From hidden easter eggs self self-referencing the animators and director, to the tie ins and nods to Neil Gaiman's 2002 novella Coraline, to the somewhat disturbing symbols such as hands and insects that come up over and over throughout the movie, to connections to other horror movies, messed up origins, and more... there is plenty to take note of that you may have overlooked last time you watched it!

About Coraline
From Henry Selick, the visionary director of THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS,and based on Neil Gaiman's best-selling book, comes this spectacular stop-motion animated adventure! Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning) is bored until she finds a secret door and discovers an alternate, better, version of her life on the other side. When this seemingly perfect world turns dangerous, and her other parents-including her Other Mother (Teri Hatcher)- try to trap her forever; Coraline must use her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to escape this perilous world- and save her family.

What are some other animated horror films? I don't know of very many English ones.

this movie is sooo detailed it’s crazy. in the scene where the other mother gives coraline the cake, there is a very hidden detail. the writing says, welcome home in cursive. it is all normal until you get to the o in home. the o in home has two loops instead of one. according to graphology this means that the person writing is a liar. which implies that coraline is welcome, but it is not her home.

In the scene where the lady’s downstairs get bowls of old sweets there’s dates above them matching the dates when the children went missing

Last time I was watching I noticed something:
When Coraline first meets Wybie at the beginning, he says his grandma usually doesn’t rent to people with kids; I feel like this was an implication that her parents couldn’t be bothered to mention her to his grandma because they always looked over her so much

Can we talk about the fact that the other dad was warning Coraline in his song on the Piano?

The true horror was the play done between the old ladies in the theater.

Another hidden reference: when Coraline has her first meal at the other mother’s house she’s given a cake saying “welcome home” on it. the o in “home” has a double loop, according to graphology a double loop in a lower case o means that the person who wrote it is lying. Meaning she’s welcome but she isn’t home.

The movie didn't scare me besides one part
"He pulled a face"
The face other father makes will always scare me It's just so disturbing and stretchy that I love it

You missed the scariest part of the movie, the old women in lingerie. Edit: It was when they did the performance for Coraline before they revealed their young selves in the other world.

That part when the Beldam screams "Don't leave me! Don't leave me...I'll die without you"

That shit scarred me for life, still having traumas because of that one fcking scene

A little conspiracy: Coraline’s other mother and Pennywise have shown to be of the same/similar species, because they both seem to be insect-like beings disguising themselves as harmless, even kind people

I hate how Wybie wasn’t in the book, honestly. I like how they added him in the movie though, it gives coraline another person her age to talk to instead of just talking to herself.
