Personally I don't think the arguement is sound. People doing atrocious things often find their own ways of justifying those actions. It isn't exclusive to religion, there is a such thing as secular dogma as well. Think eugenics or the many unethical scientific studies conducted throughout history. In my opinion the problem is dogma, not neccessarily religion.

When people stop using religion to justify their terrible actions and realize that we're all the same..

When we can listen to and try to understand people that we don't agree with..

When we start treating each other better than the way that we want to be treated..
