Environmental protesters could be jailed for up to a year if they lock themselves to gates, glue themselves to roads or block oil depots, under plans in the Queen’s Speech today.

A new public order bill includes three new criminal offences intended to stop groups such as Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil from causing serious disruption.

It will ban protesters from chaining, gluing or using other measures to attach themselves to buildings, objects or one another. It will also enable police to stop and search protesters without any grounds for suspicion.

Policing Minister Kit Malthouse: "We believe in the right to protest but it has to be balanced against the rest of us having the rights to go about our business."

These people should be allowed to protest peacefully, however disruption of other peoples lives is criminal, causing damage to property is criminal, blocking roads is criminal. So if there are criminal acts being committed then the full weight of the law should be applied.

Yes, for a long time . Blocking a road is a criminal offence . They should be locked up to prevent them, or others repeatedly doing it . Police should instantly arrest and take away ANYONE doing it .

I thought there were laws already in place. The Highway Act 1980 - 37 Penalty for wilful obstruction

(1)If a person, without lawful authority or excuse, in any way wilfully obstructs the free passage along a highway he is guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding £50.

(2)A constable may arrest without warrant any person whom he sees committing an offence against this section.

Why do we need more, surely the police can deal with this, or are they weak and useless?

The climate protesters have a right to protest. I don't agree with their tactics, but if they break the law they should face the consequences.

But, the line needs to be clearly drawn and the consequences need to be consistent whether it is a set of tree huggers, nazi skinheads, or whatever cause they are in support of. Instead of the police dancing in support of one cause and heavy handed and provoking in the case of vaccine mandate protests.

This seems like it'll be rushed through, resulting in any form of protest ultimately being punishable.
