Mine is still fully functional and helping me earn a paycheck. Purchased it as "barely used" off Craigslist in 2007. I have several meters but the 87iii is still my go-to pal.

I have experience with the earlier generation 87. Great meter, but they all develop LCD issues. Easy fix, although it does repeat. Take it apart, clean the zebra strip and gold contacts on the PCB with rubbing alcohol and reassemble. DO NOT TOUCH LCD GLASS with any fluid. Brush LCD off with a dry artist paintbrush. Good to go. Thanks for the video.

According to Fluke the 87 III came out in 2002.

An important distinction is the fluke 87III can check capacitance only up to 5uF and the 87V can due up until 9999uF

Great information, my 87-3 is also 1998 ! It is also my go to almost every time. Mine needs calibration no load shows 1.9 volts, I am going to send it off to Fluke for re-calibration.

I still have my fluke 87 III that I bought new in 2003.

Does this have auto hold/touch hold like the 87v? Or only "screen freeze" hold?

I find it much more user friendly without the bulky yellow rubber boot. Only took me 20 plus years to figure it out. Fluke 87 III, July 1999.

Capacitance only goes to 5mfd which is a bummer. Other than that it’s something I can trust.
