In my opinion, if Ao Oni is some kind of a demonic being, and the novel says it's some kind of parasite, this is implying some kind of cult may have summoned demonic parasites, which they somehow contained and experimented by injecting them into humans, creating the Onies, of course that's just my interpretation😅

Ao Oni in japanese means, if I'm correct, blue demon. I thought that the antagonist was a demon that got summoned and now he hunts down humans.

Ao Oni is one of the oldest horror games out there.

(Spoilers)

The story takes place in a Forest, with a friend group finding a Mansion that is often considered "haunted" by other people. After they enter, the door behind them closes and won't budge. Soon enough they all get separated from each other, because off-screen when the character isn't with the rest of the friend group, the main Ao Oni attacked. He was the only of the variants who wasn't locked shut. Over the course of the game, the Main Character finds more and more of his friends, either dead or alive, while solving puzzles and finding various items to escape.

The infected ones could even turn into their human form for a limited time to fool prey.
The variants are really interesting, with all of them having different character traits and stats. Some are slow, some are strong, some are way too fast, and one is... deformed..?
The main character ends up losing all his friends, even leading one of them (infected) to the surface. It's never revealed with what happens in the game after the incident, except for the fact that we know more people die every year entering that forbidden Mansion, as shown in the ending cutscene.

What I think the Lore could be

Now, don't blame me if the Lore is already confirmed or if my take is "wrong". The last time I watched something about this game was a decade ago.
I personally think that the main Parasite, that kills all of the friends, is the culprit behind the insane experiments. To me, the Parasites seem highly intelligent. He's probably trying to find a way to achieve higher forms, *somehow* finding ways to deform, fuse, differentiate the infected victims, sealing them off in a cage later on for further investigation. Not to mention he's the only one who looks like what many people would assume as "normal" or "neutral", when comparing him to the others, AND he's not locked up. A lot of it points to the fact that the main Ao Oni is behind this massacre.
