I think the idea of something in the air of the abandoned estate changing people into the Ao Oni could be correct. I think who ever built the place made something that once in hailed would turn the dead into Ao Oni maybe the creatures themselves spreading the virus in human or monster forms. The people doing the experiments didn't realize once infected the Ao Oni could spread what they made eventually infecting and turning everyone in the place. It would also explain why the Ao Oni let Takeshi go out at the end. Wanting him to spread the infection and when he dies he'll turn into one. But everyone else he comes into contact will get infected. The Ao Oni would be hunted down and killed so spread the infection with a host that's unaware.

Man I'm surprised people still remember Ao Oni in 2023, the game is extremely underrated nowadays and honestly deserves a sequel on Steam or a remake.

I can confirm as far as the anime is concerned, it's a horror comedy series, and doesn't really have any lore connections. But it is really funny, and worth a watch! As for the movie... That is one you should see for yourself, and make your own judgement call.

I watched a playthrough of a fan game hetaoni. And I loved it. It gave me nightmares for weeks but the story was amazing. Glad to finally get the story for the original game.

Wow, I have been seeing a lot of these videos as of late. Regarding Ao Oni, I mean. This is cool to see you cover a classic, and I'm curious if anyone else knows about a sequel. I remember seeing one a long time ago where in the end Hiroshi is playing hide and seek with someone and at the end, they jump out of a closet in a sort of faux jumpscare. I haven't been able to find that sequel since. It's odd. Still, all in all, great episode, R! Plenty of nostalgia.

I love ao oni. The og of rpg horror games on YouTube. Yume nikki, ib, mad father, witches house, and corpse party made up a specific era of YouTube that was my childhood.

I recommend you watch the 2017's Ao Oni The Animated Movie (not that chibi garbage). It gives a lore that explains about the demon;

It was caused by a sentient flower known as the Bluebell flower which its spores not only manipulates but also mutates the host, turning them into the blue demons. It also has the telltale sign of Man playing god as well as Nature strikes back.

This explanation gives The Obscure video game vibes.

technically there is a separate unique ending, where in the beginning hiroshi repeatedly tries to open the bathroom door and eventually succeeds, but gets killed.

I wouldn't go so far as to completely dismiss the idea of a curse or something supernatural being the cause of the Onis. Whoever owned the mansion could have been experimenting with black magic as opposed to some kind of disease or chemical. It would certainly explain why and how the Onis are able to seemingly shapeshift so easily to fool their victims.
