As we know, John Wetton's biggest commercial success was in his glorious years in Asia band. So many legendary musicians made Asia a worldwide rock legend. Asia's music has influenced people from generation to generation. As a founding member of Asia, John Wetton's creations made Asia's debut sold ten million copies worldwide. Prior to Asia, John Wetton once played in several bands, almost all of which are the British legends in the 1970s such as Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, U.K. and Wishbone Ash.

John Wetton's music and performance involved diverse styles, progressive rock, classic rock, melodic rock, jazz, fusion and pop, so he did very well in combination in different albums, which feature the different music tastes.

"Sinister" is John Wetton's 6th solo album, released in 2000. This album is also called "Welcome To Heaven" on some versions. As a famous singer and songwriter, each album of John Wetton is a great collection to review. He was a prolific musician, who focused on melody representation especially in his solo music works. For aor fans of both the aged and the young, "Sinister" should never be missed as an underrated release from John Wetton. He had so many epic creations in his lifetime, so this album seems to be rarely mentioned among all his works in the past. Anyway, as long as "Sinister" is heard, it will be unforgettable.

The album was recorded in Southern England and North America. All the songs were written and produced by John Wetton. Though it was not spread widely after its releasing, "Sinister" features a great team which was formed by music talents in recording. In this album, the recording team included these notable musicians, Jim Vallance, John Mitchell, Jim Peterik, Martin Orford, Robert Fripp, Ian McDonald, Dick Wagner, Gary Chandler, David Cassidy, Steve Hackett etc. on the instruments playing, co-writing and backing vocals. They were the members of notable bands or the legendary music men.

In "Sinister", Jim Vallance was a great partner of John Wetton, who co-wrote and co-produced three songs with John Wetton. Jim Vallance is a famous all-around musician from Canada and is Bryan Adams's great partner as well. Based on such a mighty team across the continents, the album was filled with dedication.

Musically, the songs mainly feature keyboard-driven style on the arrangements, carrying the bright and polished sounds. The opening track "Heart Of Darkness" sounds in vein of Survivor's "Burning Heart", splendidly acting as a leading theme. The full-length album includes the flaming gems and the soulful ballads with a sense of nostalgia inspired by the glorious 1980s sounds.

"Say It Ain't So", "No Ordinary Miracle" (ballad), "Where Do We Go from Here?", "Another Twist of the Knife", "Silently" (ballad) and this ballad "Second Best" form the hightlights of the album, by which people can fall in love with this album. A magic instrumental work "E-scape" by flute is a distinctive theme as if a call that "Welcome To Heaven" is just in our head.

Numerous concerts in his lifetime have proved that he had left a great deal of epic works when working together with other musicians, even though some of his tenure in those groups was very short. Up to 2014, John Wetton was still active in studio and on stage, collaborating with the musicians of young generation.

There is a precious compilation including double CDs released in 2015. It is a memorable release, carrying John Wetton's muisic landscape as a great singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (Apartfrom bass, he was also expert in keyboards playing). The compilation includes 7 songs taken from "Sinister" and this "Second Best" is included.

great choice Emily as always ... John Wetton was a mastermind, such a great composer and very humble also . I love all his solo works ( of course Asia also ), and his collaborations with Geoff Downes (Icon etc ) . 'Chasing the deer ' film had his music also . He had a special character in his music and a unique voice . Eric Clapton dedicated a song for him (For John W ) .
