【Pls look at the top comment first】When I listened to this album for the first time, incredibly, the voice I heard was from a gorgeous lady. What a killer female-fronted aor she performed ! Few works as she had, this self-titled album is a must for all aor lovers and proves why such marvelous 1980s female fronted melodic rock release like this needs to become great hit by wide promotion. Believe it or not, Alexa is what I had thought the girl was a "rockman" because of her powerful and mannish voice, especially in the verse of this song. And I know many listeners' reactions are in accordance with whatever is going on in this album.
Alexa's full name is Alexa Anastasia. If someone has an amazingly retentive memory, the line-up from this album is from another legendary band, Only Child, fronted by Mr Paul Sabu. It is desirable to know this superb record was produced by Paul Sabu. Such a strong studio team made this epic debut stand out among all classic female fronted aor releases with no arguments.
Speaking of Alexa Anastasia, she comes from Switzerland and was discovered by Paul Sabu. In 1989, it was the first time that Alexa had collaboration with Paul Sabu and all the members from Only Child, including Murrill Maglio (bass), Tommy Rude (keyboards) and Charles Esposito (drums), all of whom came out in the debut (1988) of Only Child while in the second album of Sabu's band, there was a tiny line-up change. Originally, the debut of Alexa was distributed in UK as we can find online. Actually none of them are British artists.
Since we recall Only Child's debut, it coveys typical keyboard-driven style as we can hear. Obviously, charms of keyboards also play vital roles in Alexa's debut as this track is a representative work, which is filled with big and magic keys by Tommy Rude. In many cases, keyboards act as a guider in aor, bringing an artisic and nostalgic vibe, also can enrich arrangements to make the whole work sound splendid and soul-stirring.
This track "Wanderlust", my favourite from the album is a pleasing aor gem, conveying Paul Sabu's music feature which can be heard from Only Child. On the whole, this is a melodious release including pure aor and some melodic hard rock tracks. In early years, this album was unable to sell in sufficient numbers to attract wider interest until 2006, the year when it was reissused by German label, MTM Records. Personally, I highy recommend this album because this girl truly attract me to hear her distinguished voice over and over.
Besides, I highly recommend these tracks such as "I Can't Shake You" (the flaming opening track to rock your soul), "We Don't Remember Why" (the first single, magic keyboard-driven aor masterpiece), "Dance The Night Away" (another beautiful aor gem that should never be missed), "Let It Rock" & "Heart To Heart" (two melodic hard rock tracks that pefectly display Alexa's mighty vocal growling) and the last track "From Now On" (a slow ballad that displays Alexa's soft side and the girlish feature from her voice).
Muscially, if you love Gudrun Laos & Laos' s epic debut "We Want It (1990)"; Lee Aaron & her self-titled album (1987); Debbie Davis & her Witness's only debut (1989); Darby Mills & her fist solo album "Never Look Back (1991)"; Kristina Nichols & the only debut of The Storm "Sweet Surrender (1992)" and some more female fronted aor like these, I trust Alexa and her debut will never let you down.
