I graduated w a BA in graphic design and was exposed to a bit of animation toward the end of my degree. I wanted to combine the two more and have been working on my own 2D animations ever since. This is great. There are so many free resources out there. But it's surprising how many motion "designers" out there don't have a clue about design. There's so many disciplines to mograph, but if you had to pick one I'd say learn good design. If the design is poor it doesn't matter how well animated it is. But loads of great tips here. I'd also add showing your work to other people. Either a mentor or find a community where you'll get honest feedback. Nobody does their best work in a vacuum. You need bounce off other people and if you're new get feedback which helps push you and make the work better

Some great tips for a self-taught animator like myself, thank you! It's interesting that you mentioned bloated files, as this is something I struggle with. I use a combination of photoshop with davinci resolve for animating, and I find that if I use any textures in my photoshop files the final animated file is often gigantic even without any effects, whereas without textures, even 4k files with masses of added effects end up very light. If you have any tips about this that would be great!
