I love that Uncle Phil stood there and let Will vent on him and only stepped in to comfort him when the time was right. That's a REAL father, right there 🥺

Uncle Phil was the father Will needed. He would make sure he was a disciplined individual, and whilst he would be angry and have a short fuse, he would never raise a hand at him, but when Will was genuinely in trouble or was upset, Phil would always be there to help him.

Whenever I see this episode, it always gets me in tears.

I especially love how silent the audience is and you can hear an audience member who is crying and let's out a little wail of sadness.

This scene is just absolutely amazing

"he may have been your father but he wasnt your daddy."

"How come he don't want me?"- the one thing every child with an absentee dad asks themselves. Absolutely heartbreaking but the writing (and acting) were both spot on 😭

Will's best performance was in this episode. Such an emotional scene. Gets me every time.

The way uncle Phil hugged Will when he said “how come he don’t want me man”, it’s like he was showing Will “Screw him, I want you”

2:22 somebody crying in the background. Will is a tremendous actor. So was Uncle Phil.

Ben Vereen stated in an interview that he broke into tears himself after walking out the camera shot to leave Will. Vareen, a father himself, couldn't imagine doing that to his children.

Years later, those acting skills earned him an Oscar. Well deserved.

Every young boy forced to grow up without his father deserves an Uncle Phil. I just wish there were more to go around.

As a man that didn't have a father growing up, this gets me every time. They absolutely nailed the emotions in this scene

Uncle Phil is the dad we all want but Lou is the dad most of us got.

When Will says "You too, Lou", Lou throws a subtle "damn". He knows he fucked up but he's too coward to stay or apologize, he runs away from the scene immediately.

Brilliant acting from Ben Vereen too. The scene hit him so hard he broke in tears after leaving the stage.

*"You too, Lou"*
What an acting, even for somebody of Will Smith's stature!👌

This scene is absolutely heartbreaking. I remember when this episode aired. The moment a child faces the reality that his absentee father doesn't want him and will never be in his life. Fantastic acting by Will. His finest moment on television.

As someone whose father was identical to this man. I must say, to this day. Some of the best tv/film to capture the emotions I've felt for nearly 40 years.
