How To: Remove Truck Frame Rivets

Little video on how i do it. All depends on how center the drilling is really, sometimes the heads are a pain to pop off if it isnt center. Tried a air chizzle on the heads and it removes them with less effort, but makes me def. lol. Removed 26 of these to strip the rear frame rails for t-bird IRS. About 5-12 min depending on how stubborn things get, this was a easy one.

thanks man great video..both hanger brackets were broke on a used truck I bought. took off the bed and used a grinder at home..went to a wrecking yard to get my replacements and used your drilling idea..took both sides off in about 1 hour..used battery gun because of there rules..I will say this was too ease and saved me time and money.

The initial punch you have made was a great idea.

Got our rivets removed using your method. Worked great. Did our repair work (welded a stress fracture) and replaced with Grade 8 bolts. Thanks for putting together a nice video: very helpful!

Thanks young man for the details, I went through Hades removing mine for CV swap on a 65F100, I am currently removing the rear spring brackets for the Mark 8 IRS and didn't want to make as much a mess as I did with a grinder. I too DON'T want to gouge my parts up either removing the stuff.

If you want a nice stiff drill bit for that task machinists "center drill" bits are wonderful. The end has a small diameter while the shank is heavier and incorporates a countersink.

pretty kool shits man cant wait to see more! i did a couple extensive swapps in my teenage days im a boxy import guy cant help it lol... my first was a mk2 jetta coupe to mk3 vr6, pretty easy just sub frame, 5 lug swap (including rear axle obviously), harness, radiator support, and dash also mk4 recaros that was the most tedious part 14.3 q mile stock motor not bad but i needed more... next i threw a whole h22 prelude into/under an 88 civic sedan. that thing was rediculess! ran consistant 10.9 on drag radials, stock motor, vtec timer, no rev limit, 3 step launch control, and h to b trans adapter/swap for way shorter gears. the prelude came like that it was hit in the rear so i paid 700 for it (124k mi) and 500 for the dx civic (70k mi) literally cheapest 11 sec car ive ever heard of lol. 2200 total after used drag tires on front rims, some ball joints, used coilovers, some sensors and exaust+header. favorite car ever!! im thinkin 3.5 6spd swap 94 sentra future but i just like building go karts/minibikes and not gettin tickets lol

You need a good cordless drill and battery worries will disappear. I have the 18v Milwaukee 1/2" impact (super powerful), 3/8" drill and the 1/4" impact with 2 extended battery and they're fantastic. They usually last me weeks on a charge, when dad swap and charge the other. Even my impact with heavy use will last several hours of use. I just hate cords all over a workspace. Sawzall is next on the upgrade list lol

some of the rivets put in modern frames are put on top of a punch whole so in reference to a Swedge as the rivet is set it's wedges into the area that the punch leaves( would kind of remind you of a cone Shake because of the way the punch comes through it always leaves a bigger hole at the bottom than it does at the top) you cannot grind the heads off to remove the hangers even with a torch it can take two hours to remove 16 bolts without damaging the frame or the hangers

How about with wheels on ? 👍🙏 Great instructional

Would this damage the frame holed at all ???? Thinking about doing this way it seems more simpler than any other videos I’ve seen

If you got one noting beats a torch. but if not looks like a good way to do it.

If you have a decent air hammer, it will only take a few seconds to knock off the rivet head.

7 years later and nobody bothers to use corded tools anymore

Redline - very helpful. Thank you. I'm just starting my crown Vic swap in a 64 F100. What do I need to watch out for getting the front end in? Are there websites / links you found helpful?

Good video. Will try this in a few days. Did you re-install using rivets or bolts with lock-washers, etc. ?
