According to Mark Lewisohn, the whole ring thing apparently started with Richard Starkey's grandfather passing on a ring to young Richie. He was very close to his grandfather and this first ring kick started his love affair with rings so we have his grand dad to partly thank for his name. If it wasn't for his grand dad it might have been another name, Richie Rumble?, Rich Pickings?, Richard Linehardt?

Interesting, i had heard he wanted to move to Houston, Tx before the Beatles blew up. Out of a love for Lightning Hopkins and, undoubtedly, his appreciation for the wild west and his love of westerns as you pointed out.
