Coverage for Other Structures

So what is an other structure. Many insurance companies typically define other structures as structures on the “residence premises” set apart from the dwelling by clear space. This can include structures connected to the dwelling by only a fence, utility line, or similar connection. Examples include detached garages, sheds, and fencing. There are generally two restrictions to the coverage. First, the structure cannot be used in whole or in part for “business” purposes. And second, the other structure cannot be rented. Quick side note here, if you do have an other structure on your property that you rent – many insurance companies will allow for an endorsement to the policy to extend coverage in these situations, but the coverage is not automatic.

The big thing to remember about other structures is that sufficient coverage may not be automatically included in the policy. If you have other structures, you’ll want to discuss them over with your agent.
