I had to watch the video twice to get your point well. Thank you for making this video. The point that you made about some physical phenomena being representations or depictions of others indeed refutes the main premise of the other person's argument. The example with the rock can easily be applied to mental states that are just physical processes or functions that are representations or depictions of other physical phenomena, and that can be more or less accurate. Spot on!

It's like the idea that "everything he said about determinism is *_actually_* true" never even occurred to him. Like...yeah. If our brains (and thus our consciousness) function as effects of material causes, then how we perceive the world with it would also just be an effect of a material cause. duh?

The way I look at it, the difference is whether the effect is a description of something or not. A cyclone or a blade of grass is not a description of anything, so to assign a truth value to them is nonsensical. When we have thoughts, many of them will be descriptions of the world around us. How accurately the descriptions fit the things they're supposed to describe is the source of the truth value. If I say "I own a red car" then that thought and the expression thereof are effects of a physical process, regardless of whether I actually own a red car or not. The truth value comes not from the thought itself or its expression, but how accurately is describes a particular aspect of reality. It's similar to if you had many different people draw a particular scene. All those pictures would be the result of a physical process, but some would be considered truer reproductions of the scene than others. For the record, mine would likely be considered outright false, because I have zero artistic talent.
