History of the Greek ( Hellenic) National Anthem

The Greek National Anthem was adapted by the Modern Greek Nation in 1865 from the poem " Hymn to Freedom ." It was written by Dionysios Solomos during the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Turks. The music was composed by Nιkolaos Mantzaros in 1828.

In his lengthy (158 verses) poem, the young poet reviews the entire history of the Greek Revolution and criticizes the negative stance of the Great Powers of that time. He describes the pain and the contributions of the rebels and criticizes their dissension. On verse #22 he makes a positive reference to the then young America. Solomos calls for unity and reconciliation always pointing to "Eleftheria" (Freedom), the exiled ancient Goddess and mother Greece herself , the most important human value highly treasured by the Greeks.

Although all 158 verses of the poem rhyme and can all be sung to the music of the Anthem, only two verses, the first and second, have been adapted as the Greek National Anthem. The style of its music (3/4 tempo) clearly points to the "Tsamiko" dance , the most traditional manly dance of the Greeks.

ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΕΘΝΙΚΟΥ ΥΜΝΟΥ

Ο Ελληνικός Εθνικός Ύμνος καθιερώθηκε από το Ελληνικό κράτος το 1865. Αποτελεί απόσπασμα του ποιήματος «Ύμνος εις την ελευθερία» το οποίο έγραψε ο εθνικός ποιητής Διονύσιος Σολωμός κατά την διάρκεια της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης του 1821. Τη μουσική του Εθνικού Ύμνου έγραψε ο Νικόλαος Μάντζαρος το 1828.

Στο μακροσκελές αυτό ποίημα (158 στροφές) ο νεαρός ποιητής κάνει ανασκόπηση της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης. Καυτηριάζει την στάση των μεγάλων δυνάμεων της εποχής εκείνης. Περιγράφει επίσης τις κακουχίες και τα μαρτύρια των αγωνιστών καθώς και τους επικρίνει για την συνεχή γκρίνια τους. Στον στίχο 22 κάνει θετική αναφορά στην ανταπόκριση του Αμερικανικού λαού. Δείχνοντας πάντα προς την Ελευθερία, αυτή την αρχαία θεά , την ίδια την μητέρα Ελλάδα, ο ποιητής καλεί τους Έλληνες να συνετιστούν και να ενωθούν για αποκτήσουν την ελευθερία τους, την πιο μεγάλη ανθρώπινη αξία.

Αν και οι 158 στροφές του ποιήματος περιέχουν ομοιοκαταληξία και μπορούν να τραγουδηθούν στην μουσική του Εθνικού Ύμνου, μόνο οι πρώτες δύο στροφές αποτελούν τον Εθνικό Ύμνο. Η μουσική του Εθνικού Ύμνου είναι γραμμένη σε ρυθμό 3/4, στο ρυθμό του Τσάμικου του πιο λεβέντικου Ελληνικού χορού.
