Awesome subject matter. The Saloon was the most important establishment in many frontier towns. Could even say the West was born and won by the saloon.

Santee, I live in Oroville, Ca. This was a mining town during the gold rush. At one time during the 1890s this moderate sized town had about 100 saloons. One of our old west regulars was Black Bart. There is even a road named after him in the foot hills on the far east of town.

I found it funny that, on my program at least, the ad preceding the episode was for blankets or somesuch to cover over sofas and chairs to keep them clean. So appropriate for the Old West!

Me favorite Western saloon scene? Where Liberty Valence is shot and dying outside. The doctor kneels at his side and commands for whisky; only to down it himself. Another John Ford, classic cinema touch.
