What Sex Was Like in the Wild West

Society has a certain image of the Old West. Though we look back and picture cowboys wandering the wild frontier, guns on both hips, we tend not to wonder what intimacy was like in the American West. There appears to be good reason for that, as Wild West facts about hooking up are more scarce than you would imagine. Even in a time when cat houses were a staple in almost every town and city, people still didn't talk openly about what they liked to do in the bedroom. This surely owes, in part, to the puritanical nature of American settlers. Not to mention the matter of hygiene or doctor visits. Even though it was a taboo topic, there are a few fascinating tidbits relating to hooking up in the Old West

Of course it was a professor from Boulder who said homosexuality was endemic in the old west

Stage coach Charley was a woman who posed as a man and was one of the absolute best coach drivers and protectors around. Nobody knew he was a she until after she passed away and they were doing the autopsy on her. Neat stuff all the way through tho

It is a contradiction to say that Cowboys were Puritans, yet to them gender roles were fluid and homosexuality was not a big deal. Cowboys because of their Puritanistic upbringing knew very well that homosexuality was condemned by the Bible and a lot of unhinged folks carried guns. If you read up about famous gun men in the West, a lot of murder happened because of minor provocations. So how the hell does a man approach another man in that climate?! It is much more likely that Cowboys just screwed some farm animals when there weren't women available because a sheep can't put a bullet in your head.

It was extremely dirty and unhygienic . We are talking about people that bathed once in a while cowboys on the range were out there for months at a time covering thousands of miles during cattle drives and hookers , they were working one after another when those cowboys came into towns and when people arrived in towns, you were hopping into water that someone else just got out of, at public town bath houses STD's were rampant among cowboys and hookers at saloons and brothels too lakes and rivers were safer to use then what was available of the times in towns in the way of bathing ....

Too many people got their notions of what the West was like from 20th century movies and TV. This extends far beyond just sexuality. But, as a tip to a lot of guys here, the male:female ratio was *heavily* slanted towards men, and rich, high-status men tended to monopolize the better women. This is far from the only misconception. For example, despite what the movies showed you, shootouts in saloons were rare because you were expected to surrender your sidearm(s) to the proprietor/bartender in most of them.

I always heard the cowboy would kiss his horse and wave to the gal as he rode off into the sunset. Live and learn!

Everything now has to be gay or racist. The problem is. This guy wasn’t living back then. So it’s just his opinion, trying to tell everyone his version of history, or how he imagined it. Geez. The gays and racist never quit

As usual, a wealth of knowledge shared in a very short time, that leaves the reader intrigued, and may encourage them to go find out more for themselves, and on it goes
Thank you for creating the spark folks.

How do we know what people talked about, since what they talked about was not recorded?

The coin of the realm, I guess? There was a lot of $ in cattle. Like with the fictionalized TV series, 'Rawhide?' Where cowboys would walk maybe $20, 000.00 worth of cows (maybe 500 or more?) for a week or so to rail heads. The TV show isn't entirely fictitious. There were drives and drovers. The pay to the drovers was maybe $50.00 for 10 days worth of cattle work. A pretty good-sized ranch might run $500.00 during those times. So if they did that for 2 years or less, and saved their money, they might be able to purchase their own ranch.
