Omg I needed this. I’ve been learning Korean casually for almost two years and I just feel so behind. I just recently met in person with my italki teacher and a few of her other students and I just felt so stupid and like I knew nothing. I hate when people ask how long have you been learning because I feel like it’s not a fair judgment of what you should know. I had to remind myself that we all learn at different paces and different things work for different people. Learning a new language is more than just learning that language, you’re also learning how you yourself learn. It’s hard. I know part of my “failure” of learning is not being consistent enough but also I just need to let go and stop comparing myself to others and stop caring about making mistakes because those are learning opportunities. Thanks for the reminder and good tips for better study habits!

Even as an advanced learner, I still have to remind myself to review vocabulary. Being at a high level, it's easy to skip past unknown words because you understand the context, or to just look it up once, think "ok cool that's what it means", and then just move on and forget it five minutes later. It's easy to be lazy when you understand most of what's going on, but reviewing vocab is so much better for retention long-term!

I think what makes learning a language difficult for most adults, is that we forget how much it takes for kiddos to learn just one or two languages. The constant involvement in surrounding yourself with the language is so key to retaining that information. Watch shows in the language, challenge yourself to watch without subtitles, get involved with apps that involve structuring and practicing talking with people like once or twice a week. And it is totally okay to not be a master. Half the time, you only really need the basics, and the rest will come as you involve yourself too.

I started studying korean with Billy go’s beginner’s course and I’m not sure what made me do this but I got into the habit of reviewing the past 3 grammars/video content before I started the new video, so as a beginner, I was CONSTANTLY reviewing . It became pretty much a habit for me and I’m so grateful that it did become that because that formed an excellent foundation of Korean for me to build upon. As an intermediate learner I still prioritise reviewing more than new content and I feel so satisfied with where I stand because even if I dont know a LOT of grammar and vocab, I’m atleast 75-80% confident with everything I have studied so far. Consistency and reviewing. These are the two tips I give to people who ask me because these have helped me immensely and continue to help me even now. Your videos always make me ‘think’. I love that.

I started taking Korean classes offered here where I live. I went for a year and am able to have conversations now. I personally tried to learn on my own for years and I couldn't learn anything. Once I got to class and a teacher structured my learning I got it pretty much right away.

I've been doing Korean for 5 months now, doing very well, and I thinks it's really because I have so much discipline and I know what and why I need to learn Korean, I learn 2 hours a day 6 days a week and for Sunday I review for 1 hour. Im still redoing beginner levels for 5 months and have totally mastered it. You know the Learn to walk before you run.
Not all sessions go great but there's always tomorrow.

You know I realized after I learned Korean, there were lots of words that they've don't use it just like how my native language "Filipino". we don't use the deepest words. So I only study the things that Korean use the most and often just like in Philippines. It's easy and I don't forget them easily since I engraved them in my memory. And I think it's easier to remember if you have a native Korean friend who you can talk everyday.

Revisions are so important! Because let's be honest, Korean grammar (when you grasp the basics) seems so easy. All you have to do is to add a certain ending to the verb. "Seems" is the key word :P It's difficult to memorise everything and even if you remember the meaning you don't actually remember if this particular grammar point can be used in past tense and what you should add to the verb when it ends with a vowel and so on.
And also last tip: use everything in practise. Read a lot. Translate a lot. Write a lot. Speak a lot. It works, honestly. Even if you commit the most stupid mistakes, at least you will remember it better :D From my own personal experience I know that it works. Recently I wrote a comment in English (I am not a native English speaker) and in that comment I wrote "on 1.5 speed" and "in 1.5 speed" (yeah, two mistakes, I didn't realise I had done them on one comment). Then somebody responded and wrote "at 1.5 speed". That person didn't correct me, just used that words in a sentence. And believe, now I REALLY remember what is the correct form :D
Thanks for sharing with us your tips :D

I’m starting to learn korean and your videos have really helped me! I will still not ever stop learning korean though lol. I’ve always wanted to learn it because of my grandma, she was a immigrant from Korea and spoke fluently in it. Sadly she passed away when I was younger and never got to learn it from her. So this has really made me want to learn the language. Thank you for your videos!

This is so true. I’ve been studying for almost two years and you just confirmed the things I’ve been doing. I’ve been reviewing using other sources and everyone brings a different angle to the same grammar point or whatever I’m reviewing and helps me understand from another viewpoint. It keeps it interesting just like you said. Thank you so much. Wonderful video!

Oh this is very nice viewpoint. Everybody including myself want to just keep pushing, but often forget to review. Now I am going to review more often, thank you for the reminder!

Ahh! I love seeing your face pop up in my notifications. 😊 I've slacked off in my Korean learning and have been struggling to get back into it. This video really helped kind of change my perspective and inspired me to create a fresh plan focused around review with a *dash* of new until I feel confident again. It definitely pays off to have a solid foundation. Thank you! ❤

Recently discovered you through YouTube now follow you on instagram- just gotta say I started learning Korean as of this year and struggled. I’m 6 weeks in and it’s awesome to hear I’m not the only one struggling even as advanced as you are it’s a relief and good reminder that I should just take my time this is a marathon not a race. I have signed up for Korean classes and that has helped me become more structure. Thanks for the advice given in this video and looking forward to seeing more of your content. Greetings from a fellow and current Dallas native!

this seriously is going to help me so much i know it, im so ashamed to say i have been learning korean since late 2021 (around Christmas) and to this day I still can't have a proper conversation in korean, recently alot of people have been telling me that reviewing and putting korean into your everyday life will help me alot and doing that seriously helps! like even just talking to yourself, the thing is I live in a Caribbean country and im one of the very few people who is learning korean, no one really knows about the language and korea as well so I don't really feel comfortable just speaking it around them even my family. for the past 2 years I've been learning korean by learning a topic writing it down and then moving on to another topic the next day. please don't do this. be consistent and find a method that makes your learning fun! make friends [ i recommend discord ] and ENJOY KOREAN! 여러분파이팅!
