Making wood thread taps

preview_player
Показать описание
A simple way to make thread taps from bolts of screws using an angle grinder.

To address some hostile comments:

Don't have the tools to make one? For less than the cost of one "wood whisperer thread tap" you can buy an angle grinder and make one, assuming you already have a saw, a drill, and a piece of wood and a screw.

But people have been using metal taps on wood for ages, I'm trying to counter the recent idea that you need extra special expensive taps for wood. Keep woodworking accessible.

But if this video bothers you, please unsubscribe from my channel. I'm not there to please you, and I won't miss you. Cause I like it edgy :)

nice!
if the tapped hole is tight, run the tap through again with a toothpick or similar in one of the flutes. maybe in a couple of flutes. It should push the tap off center and cut the threads a smidge larger.

also, I recommend using really thick sulfur based cutting oil. especially in light colored, nearly finished, expensive wood. :)

keep'em coming MW!

There is an explanation in the video description if anyone is interested. This is very neat Matthias. Thanks.

Dear Matthias, I'm from southern Brazil, 68 years old, and have been following your Great work for at least 3 years. All your ideas were always superb and, I have to say that have been using it a lot.
Have also buyed some of your projects to my little hobby workshop.
I'm dealing now with segmented bowls and needed a cole jaw.
Your system to produce a thread for wood tapping is ingieneous.
So I really would like to thank and also congratulate you for this idea and for all the excelent work you have been providing us for all this year's.
Be safe!
Ricardo.

Such a simple idea... but something 90% of us have probably never considered... this is great! thanks for sharing! 🤓👍

Good idea, especially for large screws and hardwood.

Thank you Matthias for showing us that you can do this hobby on a budget. For those who think this is a shot at Spag....maybe, maybe don't think anyone will lose sleep over it.

Matthias, I fully support your method of woodworking, as well as Marcs. Accessibility is very important. I've been forced to buy used tools and restore vintage tools to get the job done in my shop. I made my own wooden table saw fence because there was a need and I found a way to make one that is dead on accurate. I simply took the measurements off of a Biesemeyer fence and duplicated it to the best of my ability, out of wood. It took me a few tries and several mistakes and probably three times as long as it would've someone with a ton more experience, but I eventually made something that I could've just gone out and bought. It's been three years since I made the fence and it's still just as accurate and durable as the day I made it. Boom, I just saved myself hundreds of dollars. I get sick and tired of people on Youtube bashing you for being bold enough to offer a cheaper alternative to the expensive tools and methods of others out there. Why aren't the big tool manufacturers beating down your door harassing you for making a bandsaw instead of buying one from them? Or why aren't the patrons of these tool companies harassing you for making your own tools for a fraction of the cost of a brand new tool? I for one always seek a cheaper alternative first because it's called being frugal and not being a wasteful individual. When something breaks or I need to make a jig or tool to accomplish a task, I begin by looking around my shop for a solution. I do it partly out of necessity, and partly because I love the process of finding the solution. I also know there are people out there who simply don't have the time nor desire to fix or make something they need. Maybe they're on a deadline and need to finish a project for a client and just need to get it done as quickly as possible. I understand, I've been there. I can change my oil in my car, but sometimes I just don't feel like doing it or I'm in a rush and am willing to pay someone else to do it, even at a higher cost to me. It's perfectly fine for either method. Sometimes, though, the solution is right there in front of us and is easier and quicker than the more expensive option. Not always, but sometimes. In the case of the taps, I do believe the cheaper option is just as effective.

Mattias is so great because he does it. He tests it. He improves it. He explain it. And it is over. Compared to the other guys vids which are still dude luving the sound of his own voice at this point.

I'm probably never going to make my own wood thread taps, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching the whole process of making one in case I ever did.

The reason for that comercial bolt being loose on the nut is because it is the lowest quality being 1 of three number three has the tightest tolerance threads and therefore has no slop from side to side, also when you try to spin it it will not turn freely more than a couple of turns! If you want more info about this it is all in the machinist handbook.

Okay I see a lot of negative comments towards Marc (and no I did not buy his tap set, I use my old metal tap set for wood). Andy Kline came up with a great idea to help those who need fast accurate tapped holes in wood which was repeatable and cuts the work time down by serious amounts. With that being said, Matthias is just showing another option rather than buying an actual tap set, there are pros and cons to both sides of this coin but let us respect the actual creators of these ideas, Marc is just the middle man on that tap set Andy Kline is the creator and major investor on that deal. Matthias just has a great idea for those of us who are too poor to afford those luxury items because even in a pinch, I have just threaded a bolt in a hole and just backed it out and went further in several times when needed. So thank you Matthias for showing me a new way to do the same thing I already do with bolts and screws I have on hand :)

You can always replay the video multiple times instead of using the drill forward and reverse function. Much faster way to find out

I love the fast forward near the end. Thread stress testing looked funny but to the point. Excellent video!

You have answered my very question before I had a chance to try it out, can wood threads be cut with a metal tap and/or die. So yes, yes they can. Thank you so much.
