YouTube Animators watch Pewdiepie Draw. (ft. @theodd1sout, @Domics )

Not my usual content, but recently YouTuber @PewDiePie has taken it upon himself to start drawing. So I brought along @theodd1sout and @Domics while on tour to talk about the difficulties of learning art. This video has become a poster child for the counter argument against techbros saying "stop gate keeping art". Lets talk about it.

Everyone talks about how digital artists try to “control z” but no one talks about how traditional artists try to brush away eraser dust from their monitor.

Seeing PewDiePie draw is honestly amazing, The fact that he's barely drawn anything in his life yet seeing him get better at it for a short amount of time is crazy, and he's doing really well, there might be people out there that will take inspiration from him whether you're a traditional or digital artist.

Not only was it uplifting to see Pewdiepie's growth from buckling down to practice, but ya'll's supportive comments reinforce just how valuable it is for us artists to lift each other up. The joy coming off this video is infectious, so thank you for that.

It's really inspiring to see pewds continue drawing out of sheer enjoyment, and it shows that anyone can do it with enough time, effort and passion

i feel like a lot of people have forgotten that felix has a great eye for composition, color, and other principles that elevate visual art. he posted a lot of really cool photoshop art on deviantart way back when!! it was so cool to listen to your commentary ross + friends!!

Now this is a monumental video right here. All the Newgrounds classics up against the retired top youtube gamer diving into the animation industry.

Gather up kids. This video is historic

I’ve never heard the “replication phase” which makes so much sense. I remember when I could only ever copy something, had no skill otherwise. It’s scary to start learning the basis and start to create something unique, but it’s worth the trial and error. Love this video.

his growth is unreal, I'm jealous but also, yes I have an ego that wont let me draw anymore. Too hurt by my own self critique. To have pews' strength to carry on even when you dont like it, thats impressive.

The drawing at 6:08 feels very preoprtiond and is interesting because of the pose choice and how the hairs feels alive, i think that's why that one particular drawing sticks out

i'm so jealous that felix learns things so fast lol, like I'm a professional animator and I'm pretty good but it always takes me forever to learn like a concept or an idea, like i can easily replicate it but when the time comes to do it on my own, it's like i forget how things work lmao

I just have to say, it's great seeing PewDiePie not just take up art, but document and broadcast his journey in learning it. It's a terrifying thing, both to start something new and to share those first shaky steps, and it's so tempting to just hide away your progress until you think it's "good enough" for others to see. But by sharing that process, he's reassuring people that this is how it works. You improve, you learn, you get better, but it's a gradual process. To quote Arin Hanson, "You think I cam out the pussy drawin' Mozart?" And to his credit, nobody, not Ross, not Arin, not PewDiePie, NOBODY came out the pussy drawin' Mozart. I'm going to dust off my tablet and give learning another shot.

I do think the ref/no ref thing is a hard thing to overcome, especially if you're like me and concerned about the "copying" stigma.
I've recently picked up on redesigning one of my old characters; rather than making up facial expressions like I usually do, I referenced characters from movies and TV, those specifically that I felt most relatable to my character's personality. Though not 100% original, it was 100% better than what I've done in the past. It helped me understand what made an effective expression with less exaggeration.

I’m glad y’all understand the importance of positive feedback for new artists. When I was doing my BFA everyone in my class felt like they were constantly trying to prove they were good because we were told the opposite so much. There’s so much emotion involved in drawing that people don’t expect

I've been meaning to do something like this for years but I always drift out of doing it after a couple weeks. Huge respect for him going through with it!

the reason why coloring was soo soo good seemlingly from the start is that he did soo much photoshop art right? i remember his old series

I don't know why, but twitter "people" are angry for any shit. Like in this situation. PewDiePie had time and pasion to learn this.
