Self-healing metal

A computer simulation of the molecular stucture of a metal alloy, showing the boundaries between microcystalline grains (white lines forming hexagons), shows a small crack (dark horizontal bar just right of bottom center) that mends itself as the metal is put under stress. This simulation was one of several the MIT researchers used to uncover this new self-healing phenomenon.

Wow that was thorough. I definitely understand how this works now. Thanks!

I think the red section might be the "stress" that the metal is put under for it to start the healing process.

Is that a nano-scorpion repairing that fracture?

Millions of applications for this self-healing alloy, e.g. air industry & cars; it would maintain its structural integrity & I could go a little bit further by imagining this metal combined with nano technology so you could program the shape of the structure you wish to design as a whole, and get rid once and for all of bolts & rivets.

Very impressing discovery, to say the least.
Just a question about the video: What are the red dots?

Ten years ago...That's super battery option by now right

No they become liquid; structure-less; molten, the crystals break down as the atoms become free moving.
There are a few Shape-memory alloys but they too break down with enough heat.

Is the 'self-healing metal' news that we often see in the news these days true? Did you develop it with Berkeley?

That's why their structure reconstruct themselves?

Might be really good stuff for knife blades.. Beat up the edge while you work, it returns to it's old sharp shape while you sleep.. :)

Hmm, I see. Thanks for the explanation.

Now fuse it with my bones so I can be Wolverine.

They move more freely as they become liquid.

Wait a second, the crystals in any metal will rearrange themselves when you heat it up, am I wrong?

i wonder though if the self healing metal will correct its first position. This could be used though for cars with a metallic layer eg scratches

are you sure you had enough time to make this video! thanks i guess?
