This self healing property would need a material that has strong local electric charges in "spiky" parts. Basically when a crack manifests or a microfracture, it is irregular on a molecular level leaving electrical charges around the broken part. So the less smooth a surface is, the more these charges are pronounced. These materials probably get demi-loose atoms when a crack happens and these atoms can migrate, changing the positions of such charges, to draw more atoms.
Once such charges are properly covered, with a molecular "smoothening" the phenomena stops.
Basically means that we're far away from a visible crack to heal itself.
Strictly speaking this is the kind of stuff that would work and happen on microfractures at best.
We can hope to get fatigueless metals (wich in itself is good already) but not self-mending ones.
To self-mend we need rather "autogrowing" capabilities.
