When you’re busy with work and on a deadline, the last thing you want to deal with with is slow internet speeds. So if you’re asking yourself, “Why is my internet so slow?” I’d like to give you the most common reasons for slow internet.
Sometimes internet speeds are slow because you have poor internet service, or the plan that you’re on simply doesn’t fit your needs. The first thing you should do is check your service plan from your internet provider, to see what speed you are getting as a part of your service agreement. That information can usually be found on your bill.
Multiple Devices & Especially Video Game Consoles Use Significant Data Transfer
Every gaming console is different, however most gaming systems use a lot of download speed. This can be a serious issue when you don’t have an internet plan that can sustain that kind of data transfer, along with multiple devices of other family members online at the same time. One third of U.S. households have three or more smart phones, according to Pew Research Center.
Recommended Internet Service Plan

We recommend you:
Check the internet speed from a device that is hard wired into the modem first, to determine if the speed that is coming through the modem is the same as the internet speeds being promised to you on your service plan.
If that test comes back to confirm that you are, then next check the internet speed from various other devices, in different locations around your home or business.
If the internet speed test is significantly lower on a device that is in a location some distance from the modem, then your problem isn’t that you have slow internet speed, but rather that you have slow wifi connection speeds…
The “Black Box”
If you contact your service provider (such as AT&T, Spectrum) or purchase a wifi booster from Best Buy, or on Amazon, you’ll get a “black box” which includes a cable modem, a router, a switch and an access point. They actually work pretty well if all you have to cover is a 700s/f apartment or condo, with just a couple of users and a few devices. However in larger areas with multiple users and devices this black box just can’t do the job. It provides the wifi equivalent of the Trinity River…slow and murky.
