I have never interviewed with a FANG company, but yeah this is spot on. One company took me through a three month hiring process with aptitude, logic, and reasoning test. There was also a psych evaluation. They had me writing essays, and a whole bunch of bizarre stuff. Eventually, they did not go with me because I had a family emergency and I turned in an essay a day before the due date. The HR person said that I did not possess the skill set that I needed, but that was not what I was hearing from the Engineers. They were shocked.

My wife likes to joke that I basically provided them all of the answers that they needed to solve their issues, so I essentially worked myself out of a job before even getting hired. I took a long break job hunting after that one.

I had an interview at this industrial automation company once and the interviewer was totally ill prepared. She asked questions like “what kind of music am I into”, “how would I get an elephant into this conference room”, and “why are manhole covers round”? She didn’t ask me anything technical then proceeds to tell me that I need to reapply when I get more experience. What a joke.

I did a coding challenge for a job, it was to build a small application with React, pull data from an API and list it. I wrote more code in this interview and was more thorough and was talking out loud my thought process and I finished the app based on their criteria. I got ghosted. The job I have now, I was asked to build a todo app in vanilla javascript. I didnt get that far, but I was also talking out my thought process but got stuck. I got the job with the second interview building the todo app. The React API interview did ask me if I knew stuff that wasnt on the job description. So its not a perfect science.
