Backpacking Whitney Lake | Holy Cross Wilderness | Colorado
Показать описание
Vlog #98
The Whitney Lake Trail is located in the Holy Cross Wilderness area. It is accessed by the Homestake Road right off the 24. This road is a dirt path with some bumps and rocks, but up to the trailhead, any car should have no issues in summer conditions. There's tons of dispersed camping along the road and RVs manage to make it back there.
The trailhead is hidden from the road. To be sure you don't miss it, make sure you have the GPS coordinates pulled up in maps or watch for two yellow reflectors on each side of the road. There's a small parking area and it fills up fast, so get there early or on a weekday to get a spot.
This 4.8 mile out and back trail offers day hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and backpacking adventures. The total elevation gain is approximately 1800 feet, so it's steep the whole way up! The trail features spectacular views and a lake with dispersed camping options.
The starting altitude is roughly 9100 feet above sea level and reaches roughly 10950 feet above sea level.
This was my friend Katrina's first backpacking trip. It was a treat to share that experience with her. I will say, I did not think it was possible for mosquitoes to love someone more than me! Even with Deet, she was a mosquitoes dream. That didn't stop her from having a good time. It was a challenging hike, but very rewarding. There were some thunderstorms that rolled in about a mile in and that mixed with the steep terrain we really considered turning back. However, we persevered and found several good sitting rocks and logs to rest on the way up. Eventually we made it to camp and found a perfect site to call home.
After camp was set up, it started to rain again. We got a little worried but according to the weather the storms should be over by around 7pm. Once the rain stopped, we got out of our warm sleeping bags and had a wonderful dinner on a rock on the water. It was a perfect night. No wind. No rain. When we woke up it was slightly warm and still. The birds chirped and sang us out of bed. We had breakfast on that rock and packed up camp. Overall, it was a great backpacking trail but our legs were spent by the end of the trail!
As always, thanks for watching! I'll see y'all next time.
