In many European countries you can drive from one end of the country to the farthest point in a few hours or less. In some states you could spend 8 hours driving between the farthest parts of the state.

what doesn't help is that America is famously built for cars. You have long stretches of road that are easy to drive on, multiple rest stops per trip, ect. In Europe everything is closer together but cars were an afterthought. When we say that a 45 minutes drive is long, it's not 45 minutes of highway at top speed, it's 45 minutes of driving through small towns and villages at 50km/h and then a few kilometers of 80km/h road and then back in a village where you have to avoid people crossing, buses, drive at 30km/h in the middle, go through small roads where two cars can't cross easily, ect.

If I can get there and back in one day, or am staying there overnight, it's barely even worth thinking about. 4-5 bathroom breaks, a good handful of snacks and I'm set for a day long drive. Only reason I couldn't go longer is cause sleep. I heard a group of 3 people went from one side of America to the other in just a few days without stopping for anything but food, bathroom, and to swap drivers so they could get some sleep.

I mean, not just for dinner. Not one way at any rate. I admit, theres been a few 3.5 hours there and 3.5 hours back. Thats a nice day trip to the mountains and back. The drive is its own reward.

And then there's germany, where you may drive 45 minutes, but take public trabsport and be prepared to spend 2-3 hours for the same distance, not considering busses and trains arriving late.

how does that saying go? "Europeans think 100 miles is a long way while Americans think 100 years is a long time."

See this is fascinating to me because I live in Montana, a place known for long drives between towns, let alone any major cities, and I find it infinitely frustrating that my vehicle (an older Explorer) cannot make those sorts of trips reliably. I am effectively stranded despite the fact that I have a car. 45 minutes of a drive doesn't even get me out of my city. An hour in any direction MIGHT get me out of the county. Truly fascinating...

That's because our territories are HUGE. If you drive in one direction for an hour in Europe, you could feasibly pass through three different countries. But if you drive for an hour in the US, you'll still be in the same state, or even the same city.

I want to negate this but I am an American and I did drive 3 hours just to eat some brisket and go home earlier this week. Not even a proper restaurant. Just bought a single sandwich, ate it in the car, drove home.

I bike 40 minutes to school, it's 14 km. It's not that far- my grandparents live about and hour away and I see them about every 3 - 5 months

Nah we don’t do that all the time. However every 2 years my family and friends rent a house in Outer Banks, South Carolina which is about 10 hours from New York. That’s Half a Day of Driving.
