Stop calling them Millenials or Gen Z! | Matt Stewart | TEDxHotelschoolTheHague

After a diagnosis of an incurable form of leukemia, he decided to leave his successful coaching practice in Canada’s Financial district and moved to a small mountain town in British Columbia to work at a post-secondary school. Now Matt makes the argument we should stop labelling people with generational stereotypes like Millennials or Generation Zs. Matt believes we should introduce the concepts of executive coaching into the classroom and our workplaces in order to develop and refine the non-cognitive (aka soft skills) of the next generation. Instead of focusing on the generational stereotypes, as a society, we should focus on reframing how we support the success of the next generation “Stop Calling (them) Millennials or Gen Z!”

Matt Stewart is an Executive Coach who helps post-secondary students achieve success both academically and in launching their careers. Over the years he has worked in Healthcare, Global Finance and the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.

Gen Z here, and that headline about Millennials killing the beer industry...
Well, if that's true, then that is probably a good thing since alcohol accounts for many deaths such as drunk driving accidents, alcohol poisoning, and so much more.

I love that his talk is about stereotypes, but he's got a long beard, tats and has a husband. That in and of itself shows that stereotypes are nonsense.

Not all millennials are the same. I am a millennial, and I am different from lots in term of my current lifestyle.

So what's wrong with calling us Millenials or Gen Z? If you don't like a word, change its meaning. Millennials and Gen Z could become good words if people started using them as such. If you can't find a positive headline, make one. He's focusing on good things, but it's not all-encompassing. You have to coach the young as well as the old ones. You have to help the younger generations develop, but you have to make sure the elders can see it. If the ones in charge don't change, the stigma won't go away until they're dead.

Yes the meanness around youth in society by older people is a problem. From discrimination like being scared of youth to negative and sarcastic toxic views of everything they or we do. It's a diffrent time. There is positive traits in every age group. There's much more cruelty I could mention. When it comes to young people the rest of society just assumes harsh judgment is ok. So it's no wonder youth are dissatisfied with society, annoyed and feel misunderstood. At the same time we drive positive social change, volunteer more and engage in less risky behavior. To soft sensitive caring, smart tech gen just means you didn't have enough empathy for others in your time.

How about we stop using the term "generation" altogether? It's meaningless and divisive.
