I really like Ragnar as a character. There's a lot about him that is admirable to me, and just enough faults to make him fall far from the ideal and somehow that makes him even more admirable.
His whole story starts from a desire to explore the unknown. He had no interest in bloodshed, in fighting, in ruling. He was an explorer, and the only way for him to do what he wanted to do was the way it turned out. Going alone into sea is practically suicide so he needed company. If he didn't convince his first crew that there would be riches they wouldn't have accompanied him. He took in Athlestan instead of killing him because he was interested in new things and this new culture and religion and kind of person represented in Athlestan, which is why he had become so attached to him

What I love about this scene, (and it’s SUBTLE), is how the older men recognize him first before everyone else starts cluing in.

If Bjorn hadn't become something resembling Ragnar's equal (to the people of Kattekat) by this point and hadn't been planning on raiding the Mediterranean, Ragnar likely would have waltzed back into Kattekat here. No one dared to stand up to him until Bjorn just strolls over and asks "Why did you come back?"

Him hugging Ubbe at the end was so mf heartbreaking. His second son to a wife he more than likely never wanted in the first place, more like him than any of the others except for Bjorn. Fuck the casting was amazing in this show
