How to talk on camera and start your Youtube channel!

Today I share a few tips on how I got comfortable talking on camera and why you shouldn't wait a year to start your channel like I did! Note all of the mistakes that I made throughout this video. I could have gone back and fixed every little detail, but I would rather finish the video that wait until it is perfect. You should do the same!

Came for the desk setups, stayed for the vulnerability and authenticity (and killer production values, ofc 🤩)

I don’t have any interest in starting my own YouTube channel (despite being an avid watcher of YT in general!), but I did find this video really helpful nonetheless. I have autism spectrum disorder and ADHD (the combined type, which includes hyperactivity/impulsivity); all of which are extremely unconducive to speaking clearly and coherently! I have a lot of anxiety around expressing myself verbally (and I’ve always been much more comfortable doing this in a text-based format), whether or not in a public speaking/“performance” kind of way, or just talking to one or two people in person/on the phone/via video chats. I always feel very self-conscious, and very aware of the ways I’m “failing” (and I share your tendency to speak too quickly! It’s really hard to slow things down when your brain is trying to think about several threads all at once... usually resulting in losing all the threads and stumbling over the words I do manage to get out! 😆).

I feel like my symptoms are getting worse as I get older, which is not the way I expected things to go... I’m 38 now, and it’s frustrating to struggle with something seemingly so fundamental that most/many people can just do effortlessly without thinking... though I remember in my early 20s especially, really struggling with things like phone calls, and having panic attacks and getting upset when friends who didn’t understand would try to persistently call me. Nowadays a) people know better than to call me randomly 😂 but b) I also deal with it way better if/when it does happen, even though I feel like the actual speaking and communicating part is often more difficult... so I guess it’s not all been a decline at least! 😄

Most of this is pretty off-topic to your actual video... but I feel like even though the ultimate end goals are different, these tips seem like they might be helpful for my situation as well. I think I might try experimenting with filming myself speaking, in the way you suggest practicing talking to camera for the purpose of ultimately creating YouTube videos, and practicing both the actual speaking and getting used to watching myself speak, with a view to feeling more comfortable and less anxious in the process, as well as to improve things like coherence. At the same time, the prospect is somewhat terrifying, and seems like an unpleasant thing to do to myself (even if I know no one will be watching!)... but it also seems important enough to give it a go.

Thanks for the unexpected turn in my search for desk setup inspiration 😊

Jordan I'm crying that i saw this Video right now but i may say this is the real Time, I'm also starting my Youtube Channel and exact same problem like that and mine is even worst because english is not my first langue, As you said to keep talking in front of the camera improves more confidents to make it perfect
Thank you once again you're doing great things I loved it

Great video Jordan -- you're right, this is probably the main thing that keeps people from starting! I like your tip about taking to your phone-- a good starting point! I also use the jump cuts and editing things in later tricks all the time hahaha

Glad I found you and your channel man. Your story and mine is very similar since we both travel the world with artists and Ive been off and on inconsistently with my YT channel since 2017. The easiest way for me personally to talk on camera is from start to finish planning the video talking points with bullet point breakdowns. I actually just bought an inexpensive teleprompter so I can set my phone up which holds my notes so my talking head clips will go by faster.

Great Advice! I've always thought it would be helpful to record and edit videos that you don't plan to upload. No pressure. Have you done a video with your "studio" setup. Love the lighting.

Hey thx for making this video!!
So glad you did. I’m trying to get comfortable with talking to the camera and I just watched your support video for that. It was a great video btw! I was swaying to the piano music the whole time hahaha!! 😜I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to make my videos and for sure I’m def going to make an intro and outro with myself on video and not just my voice or no voice at all and just music. I’m in to showing DIYs on my channel I’m starting to get back into but I need to get more comfortable with how I talk. Not a big talker here but I can be silly so I think I’m going with that as that is how I open up lol maybe??? See I still don’t know, but I’ll take your advice and just talk for a few minutes, edit the video and not publish it or anything just to get started with practice and see what I learn from it! 🙏 thankful I found your vid! Have a great day ☺️👍👍

My biggest struggle its to talk to the camera when I'm in my room, I feel more comfortable when I'm vlogging in public wich it's kinda weird haha, but great point overall and the ending was hilarious !!
