Give the Fire Roll a try. It is a great way to start a fire using friction when all else fails.

I've only seen one other person show this and I think it is something that needs to be learned by everyone.

FYI, Thanks for sharing this somewhat unknown method for getting an ember. It seems like many people are not familiar with it. If using cotton, it must be 100%. You really only need a half of an unrolled ball with about a half teaspoon of WOOD ash. Other fillers work, e.g. Cayenne Pepper, or Rust, or other Natural items. The cotton can be replaced with various other types of Fibers. Your roll was way too huge and you notice it didn't light in the middle like a good roll will, it lit where it wasn't "over-rolled", at the edge. This is one of those skills everyone should know and with practice it will become second nature.

My dad worked as a prison guard in Korea, in the 1960s. Matches were not allowed for inmates. So, they'd make a rope about 1/4" in diam, with rice straws. They then rolled it between two boards like in the video. When it started to smoke, they broke the rope open, and there would be an ember they used to light cigarettes.

I taught physics and chemistry for 28 years and for the last 10 years before retiring I used our chapters on energy and energy conversion as an excuse to teach every manner of fire starting I could think of without lighters or matches. Of course the first thing we learned was how to gather tinder and actually use matches and lighters correctly. But in addition, we learned all the other primitive methods. Somewhere out there about about 850 young people who have learned the Rudiger Nehberg method demonstrated here as well as rattan fire thong, bamboo friction method, hot spark ferrocerium, real flint with real steel and charcloth, fire bow, using a convex lens and a concave mirror such as a soda can base, battery and steel wool, and of course the most difficult one, the fire plow. Once you know how to gather tinder, its all about creating an ember.

Rust works as well if you dont have Ash.

I make mine about 1/6 the size of this and have an ember in less than 10 seconds.
