A small correction: during those times when British colonized India, majority of India was under the control of the Maratha Empire which was a Hindu Empire not Mughals.

Also at that time Mughal empire was just a mere shadow of its past self, only ruling Delhi (nowadays Indian capital). It was still allowed to exist because Marathas were protecting it from its complete fall

It's impossible the Americas not be "discovered", soon or later, some country will "discover" then, not by Columbus, but by other person, probably from UK. In reality, the Vikings is the first people to land in the Americas, just they do not wanted to explore.
