It is a long weekend here in Australia to mark the birthday of the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, and I have some rare audio and clips prepared, to do something a bit different - live recordings; not something I generally post. First off, I have the breakthrough pop success of the sublimely talented k.d. lang. The 1990's were a wonderful decade for me pop culture wise, as I sort of 'put away childish things' and found myself drawn to more boutique vocalists and singer/songwriters. As I had my career taking off, the music was always by my side and singers like Julia Fordham, Shawn Colvin, Oleta Adams, Lisa Stansfield and k.d. lang were among the performers I took most to heart.

'Constant Craving' was and still is, just a thing of beauty. k.d.'s powerful tones and distinct vocal style made her a very special performer and one that visited our shores many times. By 1992 when 'Ingenue' was released and this single, k.d. had been a country/swing artist for several years, but 'Constant Craving' catapulted her to a greater success and wider reach. At the 1993 Grammy awards (for the year 1992), k.d. received 4 nominations including Album of The Year, Record and Song of the Year, and won for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance; and deservedly so. 4 years earlier she had won in the category of Best Country Collaboration for her exquisite duet with Roy Orbison on his classic 'Crying'. I followed k.d.'s career for a decade or so, after this. The original recorded version of 'Constant Craving' is powerful, polished and wonderful. This live performance at the 1993 Grammy awards is just as powerful and heartfelt - perhaps more so. k.d. lang had arrived..
