She was very fortunate to deliver twins so young safely in that time period.

I wonder if she was suffering from syphilis or another disease which progressively affected her mood and personality.

Brilliant tale of the times! Has it all; greed, sex, anger, drink. What a way to start to week! Cheers

Defending yourself by stabbing someone 11 times? Sounds like overkill to me.

Just visited New Orleans and took a ghost tour, there are many supposedly haunted brothels. One of the madams to open up the first brothel got tired of being fined and went down to city hall to pay six months' fines in advance. They surprised her by issuing her the first of the city's licenses to legally run a "licentious business"! It still stands to this day, a grey two-story building with a balcony, but I cannot recall the madam's name.

Bill Sykes? Now there's an ominous name, Dodger and no mistake.

I wonder if untreated syphilis was a factor in Kate’s mood swings and aggression.

I was just flabbergasted when you said the verdict. I definitely think he was an abused man, but I have yet to hear of a case where this has gotten a lady acquitted. Very interesting!

As a New Orleans lifer, it’s crazy hearing so many places that I walk by daily.

My favorite era of American history. Thanks for adding this case about the little known history of American bodellos.

Each mention of "Bill Sykes" made me think of the character of that name from "Oliver Twist". The one in this case had a more "gentlemanly" air than his literary counterpart, though the fact that he lived in a bordello makes that refinement seem superficial at best. I can't help wondering if anyone ever teased him about the character...
