There were 475 people on board the ferry-339 of which being students going to Jeju island for a field trip. The ferry was carrying too much unsecured cargo and it tipped. The passengers and students were told to stay put - most of those who disobeyed were able to escape, but those who stayed drowned. Only 3 teachers and 75 students survived. 😔Unable to carry this sorrow, the vice principal of the high school hung himself.

The captain of the ship - 69 year old Lee Joon-seok abandoned the ship without a second thought about the hundreds of people still trapped inside. The captain was later taken to court and given a 10 year sentence for homicide and negligence.

The story of the two students is -
The two students (Couple or not) tied their wrists together with the cord of the life jacket so if they died, they would die together and wouldn't float apart

Story of the young boy -
6 year old Kwon gave his only life jacket to his 5 year old sister as the ferry began to fill with more water. He left his sister and told her he was going to go find their parents, and that he'd be back soon. The boy and his parents never came back

A funeral was held for the hundreds of people who died that day

Rest in peace to all the passengers, students, and teachers whos lives were lost in this tragedy 😔😔

*Extra Edit: If I missed anything or mistold anything please post it in the reply section to let others know-sorry if I did have a good day*

So many people were responsible for what happened aboard the Sewol ferry. From coast guard leadership holding rescue teams back when they had a chance to go in, to the company themselves authorizing modifications to an already top-heavy ship knowing it would make the problem worse

The civilian diver who dived into the water to take a look into the ferry sadly suicided after 2 years because he was traumatized... whenever he used to wake up in the morning and hear the birds chirping...it sounded like the students who wanted to survive but can't!

There was a female crew member who actually tried to save the students and helped some of them to escape and when asked to escape..she said "you go I'll leave after you all". She was later found floating in the water dead.

I watched the video of the kids inside. They thought they would all be saved and were laughing and having fun. When they realized they weren’t going to be saved they began teaching and contacting their families. Very, very sad.

He didn’t just leave them on the ferry, he put on an automated message over the PA system saying stay in your rooms and then he left…..

Its worse when you watch the videos, and hear the phone calls, read the texts and what's even worse a student gave them the right location but they listened to the captain... May they rest in love, forever in the light.

One of my students was there . She could've been a doctor now, as per her ambition.
I remember her telling me how excited she was to go on a trip to Jejudo..💔

The worst part about this is that even though the captain got put away, the ferry company that caused it by doing basically everything illegally is still out there, running just like before.

I will never understand why he didn’t even make an announcement to tell everyone to get to the top of the ferry. I‘ll just never understand.

Its haunting to know that some of the videos recovered were the students joking about how if the crew forgot about them and they all drown.

he's not sorry, if he was he wouldn't have abandoned the ship dressed as a passenger, he's only sorry he got caught and is in legal trouble

Every time I see something about The Sewol Ferry disaster, it makes me physically ill. How could a person let alone a captain of a ship do this to kids of all people? He deserved a life sentence. One of the volunteer divers that was recovering bodies killed himself a year later.

The fact that after the ship sank and the captain was sent to prison, the kids principal committed $u$!de a few days after broke my heart, maybe he thought it was his fault for obeying captains rules too.

My blood just boils everytime I see the videos of Sewol Ferry Tragedy. It breaks my heart to see those lifeless photos of the students. I just can't believe they were all of my age and that they are no more in this world. May their souls rest in peace. I hope they know up there that we love them all.

I remember it like it was yesterday. On the morning of April 16, 2014, I was aboard a small fishing boat off the southern coast of South Korea. The sky was overcast, and the sea was unnaturally calm. I saw a large ferry in the distance, the MV Sewol, a familiar sight on these waters.

It was a regular journey for the ferry, transporting mostly high school students from Danwon High School. They were on a field trip to Jeju Island. I could almost hear their laughter and excitement on the wind. Little did we know, it was a journey that would end in tragedy.

At around 8:58 AM, I noticed the ferry listing heavily to port. I watched in disbelief as the Sewol began to sink. I grabbed my radio and called for help, but the nearest Coast Guard station was at least an hour away.

The government later said the ferry had been carrying twice its maximum load of cargo, and it had been modified to carry more passengers. They said the inexperienced crew had turned too fast, causing the overloaded ferry to capsize. But all I saw was a ship full of children, slowly disappearing beneath the waves.

As time ticked away, we could only watch helplessly. From my boat, I could see passengers wearing bright orange life jackets, clinging onto the side of the ferry, waiting for rescue. Despite instructions from the crew to remain inside the ship, some had made their way out.

When the rescue teams finally arrived, it was too late for many. More than 300 people lost their lives that day, most of them children.

The Sewol disaster is a scar on the heart of our nation. It's a reminder of the need for strict safety protocols and responsible leadership. For those of us who witnessed it, it's a memory that will never fade, a sight that still haunts our dreams.

You didn’t simply leave them. You directly ordered them not to evacuate and as an elder, most of them listened to you. You didn’t just leave. You didn’t do anything.

Colloquial Term Update:
When I say he didn’t do anything, as it’s been for the last 7 months, I’m distinctly talking about him not doing anything to save anyone but himself. I am from the USA, that is a phrasing that is used for saying that exact same thing.

He didn’t just leave them, he ordered them not to evacuate. He didn’t *just* leave. He did not do *anything to save the passengers.*
Start asking for clarification if you think there’s a second meaning to what I said. I can swiftly tell you there’s not.
