Instead of having a list of what you want in a partner it's better to have a list of what you DON'T want. Focusing on the "I want" traits may cause you to ignore negative tendencies they have or have you thinking "I can change them" or "love will change them".

This is one of the most interesting questions I've have heard. I am 53 years old. I graduated high school in 1984 and also married my high school sweetheart at the end of 1984. We were both 18. I never really thought about about what I wanted in a life partner. 2 children later I decided to go to college to pursue my Nursing degree. We've been married 34 years now and have been blessed to add 2 son in laws and 3 granddaughters to our family. I think my husband and I just grew up like family. I no more could divorce him and remove him from my life than I could one of my sisters. I guess that's a weird way to look at it. But I truly love this man. Are we "in love" the same way we were in 1984? No. It's a different season of our lives now. I'd like to think I would choose him all over again. But if I really were to ask the questions that these people answered... does he make me laugh... no. Does he bring out the best in me. Absolutely not. There is such a thing called tolerance and complicitness after a time. Some call it a rut... some call it a routine. But no I do not have my idea of what I would want in a life partner. That's sad.

Great question and great answers. I like the last one. Someone who is equally concerned about each others happiness. Her point on monogamy made me think that we should date people and know ourselves before we settle down. One teacher once said to my class that people shouldn’t date until they’re 30 years old. The more I learn the more I believe that.
