The Transcendental Turn: KANT's Philosophy of Space and Time as Pure Intuitions

Within the Pangea+ 'SPACETIME SERIES' we will delve into 2300 years of physics and metaphysics. We will try to explain how the views on 'space' and 'time' have evolved until now.

In the 5th video of the SPACETIME Series we will delve into Immanuel Kant's conception of space and time as intuitions. What is the distinction between subjective and objective consciousness? Is sensation subjective and intuition objective? Can the two fuse together? Kant says that if space is represented as an object, it contains more than the form of intuition, meaning the synthesis in an intuitive representation of the different things, given by the form of sensibility. Reality is the objective validity of space in relation to anything that we can perceive as objects, exterior to us. Exterior objects are simple representations of our sensibility, having the form of space. Space and time are given first as intuitions, and the unity of these intuitions belongs to space and time, as the formal intuition gives the unity of representation. This unity makes possible all concepts of space and time.
