"David" written by: Meredith Cody Jinks (Late August Publishing, BMI)

Lyrics:

My friend David, was a good kid
He had my back, always knew he did
He was different than most
And maybe I was too
Hanging out with the in-crowd just wasn’t our thing
There was a whole lot more
Than we could see on these plains
Well, some people just seem to get stuck, and hang around
It’s college or trade school for those with the means
There’s never been any small town for those in between
Yeah the poor folks they go to work, or they go to war
I did fifteen hundreds days in the corps
And I got back, nothing looked the same anymore
I got on with the local police, it just seemed to fit
Things have changed

By then David had a daughter and a son
And a rap sheet to prove all the time that he’d done
He was just a burned out beat down shell of my old friend
And on a three day binge he was speeding through town
And I bumped the wailers just to try and slow him down
He didn’t know that it was me, and he took off
Oh how things change

And I found his truck in the floodplain upside down
It was a hell of a rain I don’t know if he’d drowned
Or if he died on impact, it must have rolled three times
Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse
Is that his mama’s a late night ER nurse
And he was DOA, she just about lost her mind

David’s wife drops by every once in a while
And childhood stories always make her smile
But somehow we always go back to that day

And I found his truck in the floodplain upside down
It was a hell of a rain, I don’t know if he’d drowned
Or if he died on impact, it must have rolled three times
Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse
Is that his mama’s a late night ER nurse
And he was DOA, she just about lost her mind

Ain’t it the times

I lost my son in 2009. He was killed by a drunk driver and thrown 35 feet, he was 82nd Airborne. They could not locate him for about 20 minutes. A devastating tragedy & heart every day. My son came back from war different as many of our veterans do. I fight hard for our veterans & their children daily. David, your life was not in vain. I miss you every day & can't wait to see you again. Always 29. ARB X29 God had a bigger plan for you. Keep watch over us, son. Now you have your brother right by your side. Ma to two Angels protecting from above. I love and miss you sooo, sooo very much Dave and Vin. God bless our children and keep them all in your loving care.

This song definitely hits home. the day of senior prom a friend of mine that I had know since the 3rd grade he was on his way to help us set up for prom. fell asleep at the wheel flipped and rolled his truck several times and a mailbox post went through the driver seat head rest and by some miracle of god he was thrown into the passenger seat and ended up surviving the accident.

My David lived 2.5 hrs away. I begged him over the phone to not get behind the wheel after a bottle of whiskey and an ambien or two. He hit a culvert, flew, and landed straight on his roof. I was only about 30 minutes behind the police and half drunk. The way me and his mama cried at the crime scene tape gets me every day. When we watched that wrecker pull that truck was even worse.

My dad passed away due to a car accident and it’s unknown how many times he rolled but they took his truck away on 2 wreckers. Song hits close to home

Such a relatable song, Cody is a modern day Hank/Merle…my personal opinion he’s the best artist out there right now

I think what hits me the most is how many Davids we have across the whole of our country. Lives wasted and taken too early. Please God, send your Healing Spirit.

Reminds me of when my brother called me out of the blue in the middle of the night crying. His friend had driven straight off the road going up a mountain. Died on impact. Think he was twenty-five. Hard song to listen to, beautifully sung.

Lost my 14 year old son April 2023 and one of his Best Friends posted this song, now I'm sitting here bawling my eyes out cause that first verse matches perfectly. His friend said, "It would've been David going and making something out of himself though, while I stayed back in the small town going down the wrong road. David was the only thing that kept me from going too far off track. "
😭😭😭😭

I lost my mom, my best friend of 25 years and the first person I ever loved, in a motorcycle accident not even a year ago. This song hits me every time.

I have a friend named David. He went off to college and passed. He was a great guy with a kind heart. We took the same back road on our way through town.
I tend to think about him and our last chat on that road.

That song just fks me up. The people we've lost over the past ten years makes me think God is harvesting souls by the acre. The first half of our lives is spent taking people for granted and the second half of our lives is spent losing everyone we love.😢

I got a friend who went down a bad path. I became a cop moved away for a few years. I came home to work and shortly ran into him. It really sucks seeing him on that path. I pray we never cross paths over something serious. Hope he straightens up.

From day one I knew anything you drop is always worth a listen. And when I seen this pop up, immediately had to check in. Absolutely killer, and if anyone can make you feel a song strait from the heart; it’s Cody. #1 song of the year IMO brother!
