Actually Roger, they aren't. The folks that see you at Urgent Care are usually nurse practitioners. They have far less training than doctors.

My urgent care must be an outlier. They’ve been amazing. They’re our primary care doctors and caught my mom’s heart issue even after the ER turned her away (women present different medical signs for a heart attack than men, and it’s subtle). I love ours.

The urgent care places near me have now started requiring you to schedule an appointment in advance. Which, y'know... Completely defeats the entire purpose of urgent care. The whole point is that it's entirely walk-ins. If I had time to wait for an appointment, Id be going to a normal doctors office.

Roger graduated from the WebMD Technical Institute of Specious Medical Assumptions. You know the place. If you ask if a stubbed toe is serious and it replies that you need your liver and spleen removed.

In my area urgent care is the only non-ER care available outside of the standard 8-4 hours of my primary care provider. I've needed to go to urgent care to be seen on a weekend for something that could not wait.

The urgent care in my hometown used to have appointments like every other urgent care in the area. They closed that option and now it’s always a 4-8 hour wait. And won’t tell you the timeline either.

The closest one is 45 minutes away, but still way faster.

Things you should go to urgent care for:

IV fluids because you drank too much and can't stop puking several hours later

Urinary Tract Infections

Coughing for more than a week

Strep throat

Maybe a few stitches

You should NOT be going to urgent care for anything that qualifies as excruciating pain.
