I'm a senior in aerospace engineering, and Tig's explanation was actually pretty good! The laminar flow going over the center of the ball (with smoother dimples) acts as an alignment tool for the airflow to follow in the air, while the turbulent flow acts as a correction agent over the sides of the ball and makes way for smoother flow over the center. It also says on their website that the ball exhibits less aerodynamic lift, which reduces spin. With the reduction in spin, it will create a lower and shorter ball flight, BUT the decrease in lift translates to less of a chance for the ball to hook or slice (probably why if you try hard enough, you can still produce side spin, just not as much). The definition of "illegal equipment" in golf is ONLY for competition/tournament play, you are pretty much allowed to play with whatever you want in a normal round. This ball along with some clubs are actuall great tools for someone who really struggles getting around the course and needs a little boost to enjoy the game.
