Complex Amalgam Retention

This is an overview of what some literature and resident colleagues suggested for retentive elements in this large complex amalgam. Pins are controversial. As I asked other clinicians for their opinions, I began to notice a trend. If a clinician wasn't taught pins, they didn't advocate using them and elected for other retentive features and vs versa. Perhaps the most important idea (that I didn't think of, or wasn't taught), was the prevention of the restoration from being displaced lingually. I'll discuss that on the blog.

Below are some of the literature articles that I based this video on:

Six-year clinical evaluation of bonded and pin-retained complex amalgam restorations.
Summitt JB, Burgess JO, Berry TG, Robbins JW, Osborne JW, Haveman CW.
Effects of preparation design on the resistance for extensive amalgam restorations.
Plasmans PJ, Kusters ST, Thissen AM, Van'T Hof MA, Vrijhoef MM.
Fracture resistance of complex amalgam restorations.
Burgess JO, Alvarez A, Summitt JB.

The next tip that's in process is one that I just learned from my prosthodontic colleague - it is probably exactly what you're looking for and what I"ve searched for. It will be up soon - I"m close to finishing the video capturing. A
