When it comes to any amount of private information being stored. The company needs to foot the bill for everyone who's private information gets leaked for protection against any of it being stolen for their lifetime.

Can't afford to pay for that? Don't store private information.

The worst part is, it doesn't matter if you protest these databases if your parents and siblings don't.

The scariest part is, that you can change a normal password, but you can't ever change your DNA.

Congratulations, you have been pre-disapproved for our health insurance policy

Add to this the fact that companies can and will use this to discriminate and deny certain medical coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. It will only get worse with the breaches.

One one hand: scary
On the other: how much neanderthal am I?

I recently described those tests as "the most expensive and dangerous Hogwarts house quiz ever" and I stand by it.

It needs to be held to the same standards hospitals and EMRs aka electronic medical records are.

As a software engineer whose entire career has been in the medical field, I can guarantee you that most of us do EVERYTHING WE CAN DO to seperate PII (personally identifiable information) from PHI (protected health information). Not only are we required to do so by law and by our employers, but almost everyone I've ever worked with does so out of their own personal desire to do the right thing.

As someone who definitely has not worked for a company that may or may not have worked with a company that may or may not be 23 and Me...

Yeah dawg they (the company that may or may not be the one you're referring to) may or may not have the same standards for seperation of information.

Proceed with the use of their services at your own risk.

as a PhD in genetics, never would I do such a thing. One data leak and any insurance company can has access to all your potential predispositions to illnesses

Its too bad that it doesn't matter if you give it to them or not, if you have close enough relatives to you in their database, they can figure you out even from an imperfect sequence.

They had a major data breach as well. Why they don't anonymise the data blows my mind.

Haven't there already been cases of law enforcement finding family matches for unidentified DNA results

Thank you holy crap, I've felt crazy for years refusing to take these tests due to security concerns. Its wild how much trust people are putting into these places.

Fun fact, federal agencies don't need a warrant to access that information.

If you're a civilian and don't feel comfortable with it, then by all means. However, if you were ever in the military the last 30 years, your DNA is in the federal database anyway.

The worst part about those companies is that it doesn’t matter if you use it. Chances are many relatives of yours have used it, so a large chunk of your identity is still stored by them and readily accessible to the government if they want it

What sucks is the 2-near principle. Having 2 nuclear relatives on those sites means that anyone has enough of your DNA to figure out anything about your DNA. So even if your don’t ever get sequenced, if your family does, the company/criminal still has all they need. The principle comes from law enforcement.

Scary, bad feelings, bad vibes but no concrete argument

I’m beginning to realize more and more this guy just has strong opinions about things and talks with confidence so lots of people follow him. There are a lot more nuances behind the things he reduces to black and white.
