This is not just a problem with drug users, regular people can accidentally precipitate serotonin syndrome by taking mixing several innocuous things without paying attention. Example of my experience: 3 glasses of wine and Advil the night before starting an antidepressant, taking the medication as prescribed in the morning, taking another prescribed medication for migraine, then spending the entire Sunday in fetal position or over the toilet unable to drive myself to the hospital because I was delirious and physically unstable. I’m willing to bet that’s not a common scenario but something to keep in mind as a first responder. It may very well be an accident on a Sunday morning; without the context of a night club where drugs are present I’m sure it’s a lot harder to diagnose in a healthy person in gym clothes about to go hit a workout.

This is SO IMPORTANT. Not enough healthcare workers are talking about Serotonin Syndrome. I am not a medical professional but i diagnosed my father with serotonin syndrome in the ER. The doctor assumed he had amphetamine toxicity but didnt even do a drug test! I told her that i thought it was SS b/c he was on so many medications that effect serotonin and she blew me off but did a drug test, when the drug test came back clean her attitude changed. The nurses were amazed that i cought it because apparently its not common. However, i attend music festivals / raves and im well versed in the effects of SS because of the increased use of SSRI's and other antidepressants.

They may also be hyperthermic and hyper reflexive and have myoclonus too.

This can also happen from using the wrong combination of medications commonly prescribed for migraines, depression or anxiety. I was prescribed Amitriptyline and Maxalt for complex migrains, it was the worst experience of my life and no one had any idea what was going on. I thought that was it for me, I was bloody lucky.

I took tramadol for pain relief since I’m prescribed it and was in severe tooth pain. Ended up shaking for about 10 mins about 40 mins after I took it. Def scared me a little bit but my body calmed down
