1914-1918 France WW1 no mans land (the narrow, muddy, treeless stretch of land, characterized by numerous shell holes, that separated German and Allied trenches) The war is raging on, The sound of Distant artillery is constant with explosions all around. The air filled with smoke and the rotten stench of corpses laying across the field. All you can think about is home, soon you will be home, you remain hopeful as you dig in for the night and attempt to get some sleep.

The battle of the Somme rages on. Last night we saw a German position shelled to obliteration, the screaming has stopped now, but it's not something I want to hear again.

This morning machine guns fired at our position, Private Allen was cut down when he went to retrieve a messenger pigeon. We have also slowly dug our way through the chalk to a small shell crater, it has given us some ground to claim.

The bodies of both sides hang twisted on barbed wire or lay floating and bloated in the muddy water. This is absolutely hell on earth. I hope my son doesn't grow up to experience anything like this.
