Hi guys, long time no chat. Your farm looks good. Being its January 13th I would say your getting your chill hours for sure. We're near Metro Center and it hit 38 at 5am today. Since we had the strange late heat that came thru it killed lots of stuff so I'm down to the Mulberries, Fig, Blackberries, Aloes and tons of Spyder plants! 1 volunteer pepper plant survived. Just re-organizing my collected seeds and I just keep looking for affordable OLD brick/block construction homes with acreage in the outer edges of the valley (been many years as the market sux)! Take care and we'll see ya soon! Stay warm!

Happy new year!
I'd donate some of our chill-hours... ;-) -8 C and 40 cm of snow here...

My Mulberry trees in Louisiana didn`t lose their leaves through multiple frosts until we finally hit lower than 28 degrees in January. The Figs went dormant fast though but they will wake up too fast as well. I was able to cover them when the Arctic blast came. Thankfully this time, so far, the lows were only around 13 instead of at or near zero. I covered my Pineapple Guava with a tarp and only got some damage on a few tips and most of my Figs are ok.

I have two California Brown Turkey trees and I wanted to not prune them this year to slow down the vigor and see if I can get earlier fruiting before the fall rains and cooler weather. They don`t like it at all. I love their taste here (like a very sweet peach) but they split wide open in high humidity for weeks after a single rain.

Organza bags prevent bugs and spoilage when they split but after September fig season is over in my yard from pine trees blocking too much sunlight. I saw some branches with very dark smaller figs with a closed eye so I`m gonna mark those to propagate and see if I can get a type adapted to this region. The larger ones with a lighter yellow/green color with black spots and an open eye tasted like peaches though.

We’re going to hit 28 degrees 3-4 days over the next week or so in Tucson. Counting up the next 10 days that should be about 90-100 chill hours just in the next 10 days. Excited but a bit concerned about my two Orange trees. Got the trunk covered in styrofoam and covered in old style Christmas lights.

3 of my five blueberry bushes are also flowering from the warm temps and hoping the freeze doesn’t kill those off as well.

I even have 3 medium size strawberries coming on as well in addition to the one raspberry that tasted fantastic that I just ate 2 days ago.

Hi, peace and may God bless you always!

About chill hours as known: I’ve seen that temperatures of the day not being past 73f or 23c for more than 3 days in a row periods are much more important than cold that is below 45f. Like Jared talked in a comment below were he is seeing nights below 30f or 0c freezing since December but still had to take leaves out manually it would be interesting to see if he is having temperatures that are past 70f or 21c consistently because that’s what was found is activating olives in an experiment done in weslaco texas that can be found online where no temperatures below 45f were given and actually most of the winter period was at 50f to 53f (10-13c) and they fruited an amount equivalent to professional farms on the same year as long as temps weren’t past 73f 23c more than 3 days in a row and the ones that did go for 6 days were in a group that flowered poorly but still fruited some and then others were given cold of 41f or so or even below freezing but still if warmed too much past didn’t fruit properly hence was not the chill need as pushed but the warmth of the day solved by shade and or cold sprinkling. IsraEL and climates like beersheva and natzereth are an example this year of barely any chil but cool temperatures during the day and low intensity sunlight that doesn’t break the rest cycle. They have U pick cherry 🍒 farms too so no freezing or below 45f for long needed but cool not past 73f for long days and if 68f steady great!

Duane! What’s that white stuff on your chin buddy. 😂 Just teasing, it looks great. You look like me hahaha. One thing I gotta admit, I kinda like the gray in my beard, since I was unwillingly thrust back into the single life last year I’ve discovered that the ladies always compliment me on it, lol. We have had a few sub 30 degrees mornings since December but I had to pull leaves yesterday on a few that must have been in little microclimates. I’m excited about expanding my orchard next month. I have about 3-4 dozen trees I grafted last year and grew out in tree pots that I have to get into the ground.

Wow that's a lot of work ... like picking Macadamia Nuts off the tree and knowing they will fall off by themselves in a few more weeks.
