One thing I did not realise is that your feet can be facing backwards by the time you look over your shoulder. I was trying to look forwards while my feet were still facing forwards, or to the side, tying myself in a spiral. I find I can just about see over my shoulder with my rear leg still facing to the side.
The two ways of initiating the kick are really helpful.


Another thing that someone from Taekwondo (no affiliation. I do karate)
said is that it is best to throw the kick when your opponent is in front of your left shoulder because the maximum power of the kick is about that position -- it is difficult to maintain the power all the way through to the front. So you can step to the right, or throw the kick when the opponent has moved to the left but this teacher looks like he cn generate the power all the way through.
